Too Hard for God 08/29/2024

"Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?" (Jeremiah 32:27) Jeremiah was perplexed. Having prophesied the imminent destruction of Jerusalem, he was now under arrest by order of the king of Judah, accused of treason. Babylon was besieging the city. The end was in sight. Then, out of the blue, God speaks to the prophet to buy a field from his cousin....

By his wounds you have been healed.” (1 Peter 2:24) Deitrich Bonhoeffer famously stated, “When God calls a man, He bids him come and die.” This is the minimal condition of discipleship which we too easily pass over. Who Will Help Me?

Where do I look when the impossible situation comes my way? Where does the wisdom needed come from? Where do I look to calm my fears?

Many of us, down through the ages have gone to this Psalm for guidance, reassurance and comfort. My wife and I both view this Psalm as one of great importance in our own journey through life. You may also find this Psalm of great comfort and help in your current situations. Take a moment to read and reflect on this Psalm.

"I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel Will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun will not smite you by day, Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul.
The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in From this time forth and forever." (Psalms 121:1-8)

Here are a few questions that might assist your reflection:

• What did you feel as you read this Psalm?
• What one or two phrases speak directly to your current situations and needs?
• Who do you know who might also be comforted by this Psalm?
• Take a few moments to pour out your thoughts and anxieties to the Lord? Then again read this Psalm.

How can I say enough, "Thank You for all You have done for me!" This passage has such depth yet is so simple and it propels me to a spirit of wonder and thankfulness. It may do the same for you. Take a few moments to read and reflect on these profound verses.

"For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authoritiesall things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

"And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister." (Colossians 1:13-23)

Here are a few questions that might assist your reflection:

- What was our state before we were rescued?
- Where were we transferred to?
- List (perhaps underline or highlight) all the descriptions, roles, and authorities that the Lord Jesus Christ has from this passage. What emotions come to you from this?
- What does this cause you to want to do?
- Take some time to reflect on this passage and what you've observed and take your thoughts to the Lord.

One of the most powerful portions of the Scriptures was on my menu of Bible reading a few days ago. It is hard to bypass it without being challenged at the core of my being. Take a minute to read it and see how it might challenge you.

"Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:1-11)

Here are a few questions that might assist your reflection:

- What attitudes do you see in Christ Jesus from this passage?
- How do His attitudes challenge you?
- Note that the Apostle Paul, who wrote this, encourages us to have the same attitudes of Jesus. What is one attitude that you know needs to change?
- Take a few minutes to reflect on this passage again and ask the Lord to make you more like Jesus in your attitudes.

A cost / benefits analysis is warranted when considering the cost of following Jesus. He said it Himself in passages like Matthew 16:24-27. But today we are going to look at some of the benefits.

One passage that has for the last 54 years of my journey as a follower of Jesus, is Psalm 103. In this Psalm of King David, he talks about the benefits given to those of us who follow the Lord. Take a few moments to read and reflect on these benefits.

"Bless the Lord, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits;
Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases;
Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.
The Lord performs righteous deeds And judgments for all who are oppressed.
He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the sons of Israel.
The Lord is compassionate and gracious, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever.
He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.
As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.
For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust.
As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, And its place acknowledges it no longer.
But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children's children,
To those who keep His covenant And remember His precepts to do them." (Psalm 103:1-18)

Here are a few questions to assist your reflection:

- How many benefits for those who follow the Lord can you find?
- Which one or two benefits are most meaningful to you? Why?
- Think of a person who is close to you and ask yourself, which one of the benefits might be most helpful to them? Take some time to share your thoughts with that person (could be a text, email, voice mail or phone call).
- Take some time to talk with the Lord and thank Him for each one of the benefits you found in this Psalm. Thank Him for His lovingkindness and compassion.

What do I pray for? What do I want people to pray for me? What do I pray for others? Good questions.

Over the years I have often used Paul's prayer below as the content of my prayers. This passage has such rich meaning and is worthy of our attention as we seek prayer for ourselves and others. Take a moment to read this passage. Perhaps even reading it a second time with the awareness that the Spirit is praying for you through these words.

"For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints, do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers; that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.

These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all." (Ephesians 1:15-23)

Here are a few questions that might assist your reflection:

- What are the things Paul prayed for them (as us as we read it)? How do I respond to each of these?
- What do you glean about Jesus' authority from this passage?
- What is the most challenging thought to you from this passage?

How does one attain wisdom? Long term thinking based on solid truths are at least a few of the factors involved in attaining wisdom.

The Psalmist takes us to an eternal perspective which is based on bedrock truths. This leads to his prayer that he might present a heart of wisdom. Let's take a minute to read and reflect on this powerful, yet simple passage.

"Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
You turn man back into dust And say, "Return, O children of men." For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by, Or as a watch in the night. You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep; In the morning they are like grass which sprouts anew.
In the morning it flourishes and sprouts anew; Toward evening it fades and withers away.
For we have been consumed by Your anger And by Your wrath we have been dismayed.
You have placed our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your presence.
For all our days have declined in Your fury; We have finished our years like a sigh.
As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if due to strength, eighty years, Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; For soon it is gone and we fly away.
Who understands the power of Your anger And Your fury, according to the fear that is due You?
So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom." (Psalm 90:1-12)

Here are a few questions that might assist your reflection:

- In what ways does your heart resonate with the Psalmist? Where does it differ?
- What are one or two new thoughts this Psalm brings to light? How do they impact you?
- In light of the truths in this passage, how might you re-order your life to present to the Lord a heart of wisdom?
- Take a moment to share your thoughts with the Lord. Perhaps you could even share your thoughts with a few others.

The Chief tax gatherer for the Roman Empire in Jericho wanted to see Jesus. What were his motives? To see how much Jesus and his followers were worth for the sake of taxing them as they passed through? Or did he have other motives?

As you probably know, Rome employed locals to be its tax gatherers. The Jews view Jewish tax gatherers as traitors and lower than the scum of the earth. Let's look at this brief passage and then ponder the outcome of Zaccheus' encounter.

"He entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house." And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly. When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner. "Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." " (Luke 19:1-10)

Here are a few questions that might assist your reflection:

- As you read this encounter, what do you think Zaccheus' motives were for seeing Jesus?
- Why do you think Zaccheus was surprised Jesus called him to come down from the tree?
- What evidence did Zaccheus show of a radical change in his heart?
- What lessons can you glean from Jesus' encounter with Zaccheus?
- How might the Lord be speaking to your heart from this passage?

Have you ever pondered what the long-term value of wealth is? How much is money and wealth really worth at the end of our life? What happens to us when we die? How valuable is our earthly net worth then?

Jesus shared a story about two men who had radically different lifestyles and net worths. But read the story. It serves as a reality check on our current priorities.

"Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.'

But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father's house for I have five brothersin order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' But Abraham *said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' But he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!' But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'" (Luke 16:19-31)

Here are a few questions that might assist your reflection:

- What most strikes you about the contrasts between Lazarus and the rich man?
- Which person are you most alike? Lazarus or the rich man?
- What do you learn about eternity and life after death from this passage?
- How will this story change your priorities in this life?

Two sisters were entertaining Jesus in their home for a meal. One put the priority on the tangible, here and now, details of fixing dinner. The other put the priority on their guest and what He had to say. It was an honor to have individual time with the most popular teacher and miracle worker in the land in their very own home. Yet they looked at the honor very differently. Take a moment to read this brief passage.

"Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me." But the Lord answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:38-42)

Here are a few questions to assist your reflection.

-If you had Jesus in your home for a meal, would you be a Mary or a Martha?
-If you answered "Mary", how does this show up in your current priorities of listening to Jesus?
-If you answered "Martha", how might you re-orient your priorities to be more like Mary who sat at the feet of Jesus?

David was being chased by King Saul in the wilderness. He shares his heart with the Lord through this Psalm. Over the years it has been one of my personal go-to Psalms whenever I am feeling alone, under attack or distressed. I always feel refreshed and hopeful when I ponder these words and reflect on the perspective David shares.

"O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water.
Thus I have seen You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory.
Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips will praise You.
So I will bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, And my mouth offers praises with joyful lips.
When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches, For You have been my help, And in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.
But those who seek my life to destroy it, Will go into the depths of the earth.
They will be delivered over to the power of the sword; They will be a prey for foxes.
But the king will rejoice in God; Everyone who swears by Him will glory, For the mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped." (Psalm 63:1-11)

Here are a few questions to assist your reflection:

- What are a few burdens, distresses or attacks you are facing these days?
- As you read and ponder this Psalm, what new perspective to you glean from this Psalm?
- In what ways does this Psalm bring you hope?

- How does this minister to you?
