“When pregnant, the cells of the baby migrate into the mothers bloodstream and then circle back into the baby, it’s called “fetal-maternal microchimerism”.

For 41 weeks, the cells circulate and merge backwards and forwards, and after the baby is born, many of these cells stay in the mother’s body, leaving a permanent imprint in the mothers tissues, bones, brain, and skin, and often stay there for decades. Every single child a mother has afterwards will leave a similar imprint on her body, too.

Even if a pregnancy doesn't go to full term or if you have an abortion, these cells still migrate into your bloodstream.

Research has shown that if a mother's heart is injured, fetal cells will rush to the site of the injury and change into different types of cells that specialize in mending the heart.

The baby helps repair the mother, while the mother builds the baby.

How cool is that?

This is often why certain illnesses vanish while pregnant.

It’s incredible how mothers bodies protect the baby at all costs, and the baby protects & rebuilds the mother back - so that the baby can develop safely and survive.

Think about crazy cravings for a moment. What was the mother deficient in that the baby made them crave?

Studies have also shown cells from a fetus in a mothers brain 18 years after she gave birth. How amazing is that?”

If you’re a mom you know how you can intuitively feel your child even when they are not there….Well, now there is scientific proof that moms carry them for years and years even after they have given birth to them.

I find this to be so very beautiful.

Why delay your baby's bath at birth?
VERNIX.
Vernix is a thick coating that protects your baby’s delicate skin from the acidic levels of your amniotic fluid. Vernix also doubles as a lubricant that helps your baby slide through the birth canal and humans are the only species who are blessed with it. Studies show that leaving the vernix on your baby's skin for 24 hours allows for the benefits to be fully absorbed. So, rather than washing your babies vernix away, try to rub it in as best you can and delay that first bath.

God's design includes such a unique lubricant for your baby and the ease of birthing! SO, amazing!! 🙌🏽

"Milk" engineers are at it again. WILK, formerly known as Biomilk, has received a patent on its process and technology associated with cell-based animal and human mammary cell fluid production. The company also recently claims to have been able to replicate lactoferrin, which they plan to sell to infant formula companies. Lactoferrin is a key component of human milk providing not only protein, but also acting as a iron carrier and providing immune protection by acting as defense against pathogens. Keep your eyes on this FemTech, lactation supporters.

I get a LOT of people in my office around 4-5 months where baby was never introduced to a bottle in the early months and now baby is refusing all bottles. When talking about bottles, there is no developmental age when a baby needs to take a bottle. The way a baby bottle and breastfeeds are actually completely different. They use different muscle groups and a different action in the mouth. The main difference between breast and bottle feeding is the importance of negative pressure/suction. Baby needs to create negative pressure and a vacuum in the mouth to maintain the human ni**le in the correct placement and shape while breastfeeding. Their tongue cups around the ni**le and touches the palate to create a vacuum seal to maintain the latch and efficiently remove milk from the breast. The bottle ni**le is rigid and does not lose shape. A baby can just compress a bottle ni**le and still remove milk, making the vacuum less important. If your older baby won’t take a bottle, consider offering an open cup instead, especially if baby is around 5-6 months when one would be introduced with solid foods anyway. Using a small cup that they can easily grab works great. The @ezpzfun Tiny Cup works great, as do shot glasses, medicine cups, or any small cup that holds about 1-2 ounces. The smallest cup we call a spoon, as the amount of liquid it can hold is small and controlled. So you can always start teaching cup feeding with a spoon!! Yes, it’s going to be messy to start, but with time and practice it can actually be much less stressful to teach than a bottle at that age. This is my Peach at 6 months. She completely refused to take a bottle when I went back to work at 5.5 months and I transitioned her to an open cup and the honey bear straw cup. You can start cup feeding at BIRTH! And it’s a great way to promote the same muscles of breastfeeding on an alternate utensil while working on breastfeeding.

Have you tried cup feeding with your little one yet?

Grandmother breastfeeding her grandchild. It is a common practice in many cultures for a grandmother to relactate so that she may breastfeed her grandchild. It is truly an act of love.
A lot of people seem to be curious about how this is possible. Breastmilk production is all about supply and demand. The breasts can continue to make milk indefinitely as long as there is a demand for it.
People also seem to be curious about how menopause might affect this. Pituitary glands are necessary in the production of breastmilk and menopause does not restrict the pituitary glands ability to function.
So, yes, even after menopause it is still possible to produce enough milk to nourish a baby.
Loving all of the conversation around this?! Aren't women's bodies just amazing?
We can do so many things that we didn't even know 😉

"See that tiny pink bead on my lanyard? That is the size of a newborn's tiny tummy. When baby is born, the birthing parent produces colostrum for baby, which is the perfect for baby. Colostrum contains just the amount of food baby needs and passes antibodies. It's ! In this photo, I have a standard 2 ounce bottle of formula that is given to new babies. So, if baby's belly is only the size of a marble, what happens when baby is fed 2 ounces? Well, baby will usually spit up all the extra, which then can be spinned into baby having reflux. When really, baby is just being over fed. This leads to interventions like formula changes, antacid medications, etc. It's important that we give families all the available information so they can make the best decisions for their families. Awesome!!

UPDATE: Our relative, Michelle Kakegamic (Oji-Crees from Muskrat Dam) is still breastfeeding her 7-month old triplets! She shared these beautiful photos with us. Look at those well-fed babies!

“All of these items were gifted to us - starblankets & bonnets were gifted by some members in sabaskong- all handcrafted. Starblankets for their new journey of birth, their moccs made by my friend MJ, my slippers gifted by my late godmother, and the ribbon skirts made by a lady from Fort William. The mom and me skirts represent water and how water is life.”

Closer to your next goal of 9 months. Keep it up, Mama! Lulululu!

What happens if my baby has a cord around their neck!?

A nuchal cord is a common occurrence. 1/3 of babies are born with a cord around their neck. We simply unwrap it, or loosen it for the baby to go thru it, rarely a cord will be quite tight and it can prevent the baby from coming after the head and may require a little more work or in extreme situations, cutting the cord immediately. It’s more common for babies with long cords to have at least one wrap, sometimes multiple wraps around the neck . It is considered to be a safeguard, if the cord is wrapped around the neck, that would prevent it from coming ahead of the baby.
The normal, healthy umbilical cord is filled with Wharton’s jelly, a soft, gelatinous substance which protects the vessels inside the cord to prevent any disruption in the blood supply during pregnancy or labor.
