Langston will have an E-Learning day Tuesday January 9, 2024

Parents,

When the weather conditions make it unsafe for students to attend school, Langston will close the building. In most cases, we follow Greenville County Schools. That information will be on WYFF4 and Langston's page. Now, with the option of going virtual, we can continue to provide instruction for students without having to make up the day.

When school buildings are closed due to inclement weather, Langston will use the following plan utilizing virtual instruction until it is safe to reopen:
1st Teachers will provide a lesson/activity through Teams for students to complete virtually.
• Lessons/activities will be posted in Teams by 9:00.
2nd Students will need to log into Teams to view and complete assignments.
• Work will be posted in Teams by 9:00.
• Students will not be on a set schedule for the day. Students can work at their own pace to complete assignments.

Power outage and internet service loss:
If your student does not have power or internet access, an opportunity will be provided to complete the assignments when internet service is restored. Students should do their best to communicate with teachers.

If teachers are unable to post assignments through Teams due to loss of power or internet, they will work with administration to post a message related to their inability to work in Teams. Students will be notified through Teams.

One advantage of using Teams is that it is accessible on multiple devices including phones.

Our Mr. Black
Memorial for our Leadership teacher

Even as a student, Bobby Black was a leader. At Greenville High School, he got involved, took on tasks that no one else would head up and volunteered for everything. He had an interest in politics and government and became part of the ‘Youth in Government’ program during his high school years.
As a student at North Greenville University and then Furman University, he also volunteered as part of the resource staff of the YIG alumni. He volunteered for more than 20 conferences and trips during his 4-year college career.
He took his love for learning and his love for government and turned it into a career as a Social Studies teacher at Mauldin High School. There, he was also the Speech and Debate coach, and he was able to take their YIG program to a new level, winning state, and national awards. He was teacher of the year 2002-03.
When Langston opened in 2005, Bobby was hired as a Leadership teacher and developed and wrote Langston’s inaugural Leadership curriculum. His program guides students to show respect for themselves and others, to have personal ownership of their life and actions, to serve those in need and manage the influence they have over others.
During his time at Langston, Bobby Black also headed the Youth in Government program and took many trips to Columbia with students, including leading the largest middle school delegation in the first few years he was at Langston. He was a teacher of debate and public speaking as well. Those who learned from him developed skills for a lifetime.
Bobby was known for his infectious smile and his love for teaching. People that worked with him called him “the Legend”. He was caring, funny and he made you want to be a better person. He lived his Christian faith and always had a positive outlook on life.
In 2007, Bobby was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. He battled this demon until March of 2016. He left a huge hole in our hearts and at our school. The leadership program continues to this day under the guidance of Ms. Bev Cannon and Mr. Geoff Hill. It is a program unique to Langston and we hope you ask your students about what they are learning.
The next time you visit our campus, we encourage you to view our new Bobby Black Memorial, located in the front courtyard under the flagpole.

Langston Charter Middle School is excited to be partnering with The Blood Connection again on a fundraiser that could raise thousands of dollars for The Langston Foundation!

On Saturday, February 6th the Blood Mobile will be at the gym on campus from 11:00am to 3:00pm accepting blood donors by appointment. Each parent, friend, faculty and student over age 16 who signs up and donates/attempts to donate will earn $20 for the Langston Foundation. I know we can do it!

When you donate, you will receive a delicious cookie from Crumbl, a free Covid antibodies test which lets you know if you have been exposed to the virus, AND…. the BEST PART is that the Langston Foundation will receive $20 per donation (or even attempted donation!).
