The % Daily Value on the Nutrition Facts Label is very helpful. If an item is 5% or less, that item is "low." If an item is 20% or more, that item is "high." Look for low sodium and low added sugar the next time you shop.
Now’s a good time to be scouting. Seeing more birds in your fields than usual is also good indicator of armyworm presence.
We've been getting reports of folks seeing fall armyworms!
Fall armyworms impact three major commodity areas:
➡️hayfields, forage, and pastures
➡️sports fields and commercial turf
➡️home lawns
Hay fields are not all they damage. Fall armyworms like bermudagrass wherever they can find it and will also damage turfgrass in home lawns, sports fields, golf courses, commercial landscapes and elsewhere. Although they prefer bermudagrass, they will also attack other grasses, such as Bahia grass hayfields, early planted wheat, and winter forage grasses, and even other turfgrasses, especially in heavy outbreak years.
How can you keep fall armyworms from causing heavy damage to your hayfield or turfgrass this year? Be ready for them! Check your hayfields or bermudagrass lawns and turf regularly and be prepared to treat promptly once you detect an infestation.

The Emergency Forest Restoration Program, or EFRP, is open to landowners in all 82 counties with private, nonindustrial property in rural areas who have lost pine trees related to pine bark beetle infestations that stemmed from last year’s drought.
“Currently, properties located in city limits are excluded regardless of their acreage,” said Curtis VanderSchaaf, forestry specialist with MSU Extension.
Administered through the Farm Service Agency, or FSA, the program provides a 75% cost share for restoration practices approved by the Mississippi Forestry Commission, or MFC. The application period closes on Aug. 15.
VanderSchaaf said only landowners with rural properties that had existing pine tree cover before the drought and pine bark beetle infestations are eligible to apply for the funds. The forested land must be at least one acre in size, be at least 120 feet wide and have had a canopy of live trees that covered at least 10% of the area. The landowner must also incur at least $1,000 of the costs related to restoration. The program’s payment limitation is $500,000.
Costs related to debris removal, replanting and/or forest protection can be reimbursed if they are approved by MFC beforehand.
