Hinsdale occasionally experiences overnight driveway incursions, where individuals stroll through neighborhoods in the middle of the night, searching for unlocked cars to rummage through. Their goal is to locate vehicles with the key FOBs inside, which can lead to auto theft.
Each year, Hinsdale suffers losses due to this type of crime. Recently, an attempted auto theft occurred early Saturday morning at 5 AM in the neighborhood just north of Hinsdale Hospital. A police officer noticed a suspicious vehicle in the area, which fled southbound on I-294 at a high rate of speed.
Several hours later, a resident in the same neighborhood reported an auto burglary. After reviewing footage from their home surveillance system, the resident discovered that their car had also been targeted around 5 AM—just prior to the officers’ encounter with the suspects. The offenders had approached the resident’s driveway and rummaged through their unlocked vehicle.
To help protect your vehicle and belongings, please remember to lock your car doors and remove key FOBs every night. If you witness any suspicious activity, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 immediately. It is important to note that offenders in these incidents may be armed. In this recent case, one suspect appeared to be concealing an object, likely a firearm, under his clothing.
Please remember:
- Lock your car doors.
- Call 9-1-1 if you see suspicious activity.
- Do not confront the suspects.
Your vigilance can help keep our community safe.

***Public Notice***
A public information session will be held on June 10th as part of an on-site assessment of the Hinsdale Police Department as it seeks accreditation from the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP). The Hinsdale Police Department has maintained accreditation with CALEA a national organization since 1996. This process is for a newly minted state accreditation.
Agency employees, elected officials, and community members are invited to call into the session from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on June 10, 2024. Comments will be limited to five minutes and must address the department's ability to meet standards outlined by the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program. Written comments also can be mailed or emailed.
Assessors – Steven Weatherford, Fmr. Assistant Chief of Police at the Illinois Commerce Commission and Jim Clark of the University of Illinois Police Department, will review written material, conduct interviews, visit police officers, talk with elected officials, and evaluate other areas of the department. When assessors complete their evaluation, they will submit their findings to the ILEAP committee chairman, who reviews and distributes the report to the full council for consideration. If granted, accreditation lasts four years and would require Hinsdale to submit annual reports.
Public comments can be submitted during the June 10 session by calling (630) 417-2903; mailed to the Hinsdale Police Department, Attn: ILEAP Accreditation Process, 121 Symonds Dr., Hinsdale, IL 60521; or emailed to Steve Weatherford at [email protected].
A copy of the accreditation standards is available on the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police website.

A Guide to the E-Bike and Electric Scooter Ordinance for the Village of Hinsdale.
Please see the attached flyer for a summary of the recent ordinance implemented by the Village of Hinsdale regarding the use of Electric Bikes and other electric motorized devices.
In order to be considered a legal low-speed electric bicycle, it must be equipped with pedals and an electric motor with a power output of less than 750w, as cited by Illinois State Law. Additional classifications and requirements are shown here. Only bicycles or legal low-speed electric bicycles can share the roadway with motorists in Hinsdale.
ANY product equipped with an electric motor with a power output GREATER than 750w is strictly prohibited on the public way. This includes scooters, one-wheels or any other electric motorized devices.
Be aware of deceptive advertisements from manufacturers that promote their products as "electric bicycles". If a product is equipped with a motor output of more than 750w and has two wheels, it is no longer considered a bicycle due to the high power motor. These products are considered dirt bikes, motorcycles, or, in some cases, a motor vehicle, despite its ability to be pedaled.
In Hinsdale, low speed stand-up electric scooters under 750w are permitted on the sidewalks, except they are NOT permitted on the sidewalks in the business district.
Please make a note that the ordinance pertaining to stand-up electric scooters and other devices under 750w are specific to Hinsdale. The legality and use of electric motorized devices will vary depending on the community you are operating them in. The Hinsdale ordinance mirrors state law as it pertains to low-speed electric bicycles.

**Auto Theft - Situational Awareness**
The Hinsdale Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into an Auto Theft that took place at the BP Gas station at York and Ogden on Monday at 11:15 A.M.
Surveillance footage captures the victim refueling their vehicle when the suspect covertly approaches from a neighboring fueling area and waits for the victim to finish. Once the victim returns the nozzle to its mount, the suspect uses that opportunity to enter through the unlocked passenger side door and take possession of the vehicle. The suspect flees with the victim’s vehicle northbound on York Road.
The suspect arrived in a dark colored SUV, which parks at an adjacent pump about 1 minute prior to the auto theft.
We recommend that you turn off your vehicle when fueling and be aware of your surroundings. Similar cases have occurred in the greater Chicagoland area.
Just a reminder that Village code requires you to file an annual permit and pay the annual fee for your burglar and/or fire alarm. 🚨
Forms may be obtained with this link [ bit.ly/AlarmPermitForm ] OR on the Village’s website at Residents>Forms to Download>Police Department>Alarm Permit Form.
Fees may be paid at Village Hall, 19 East Chicago Ave., Hinsdale, IL 60521.

Trick-or-Treaters will be ringing doorbells this Tuesday. Please consider these tips to have a safe and fun Halloween:
-Motorists should use extreme caution and be alert for youngsters crossing streets. Pedestrians should look both ways and only cross streets at corners.
-Children should wear light colors or put reflective tape on their costumes or bags. Glow sticks and flashlights are also great for remaining visible to motorists after dusk.
-Remember, there is safety in numbers. An adult should accompany young children and older kids should trick-or-treat together.
-Do not go inside strangers’ homes and only trick-or-treat in neighborhoods you know. Let an adult know what time you plan to be home.
-Carry a fully charged cell phone and review how to call 911 in an emergency. Report suspicious activity to the Hinsdale Police Department immediately by calling 911.
-An adult should inspect all candy in a well-lit place and discard any homemade, unwrapped or damaged treats.
We hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween!
