A big MAHALO to our hard-working nursing team, who recently earned the Pathway to Excellence designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center!
The Pathway to Excellence requires our team of nurses to meet the six standards of an ideal nursing practice and environment. The essential elements are used to develop a positive practice environment for nursing across various healthcare settings.
When the Pathway Standards are embraced throughout our organization, the positive effects ripple through the entire community. Our nurses, patients, and the Tripler Army Medical Center organization all benefit from this commitment to excellence.

Thank you to Col. Nicole Powell-Dunford, of Desmond Doss T. Doss Health Clinic, for serving as our Women’s Equality Day guest speaker yesterday in Tripler Army Medical Center’s Kyser Auditorium!
The event opened with an introduction of women who contributed to United States and military history from Staff Sgt. Lisa Smith-White.
Powell-Dunford spoke about how women have served in various capacities and how policies have changed within the military to include combat positions, body gear fit, breastfeeding options, and pregnancy and postpartum care.
“Be an advocate. Always think readiness, make alliances, go to the top, work solution sets, don’t be afraid to ask for assistance, and know when to compromise,” Powell-Dunford said.
Congratulations to the Best Medic 2024 Winners, Capt. Jess Guerin from Desmond T. Doss Health Clinic and Sgt. Nazariy Kurpita, from Medical Readiness Battalion, Hawaii. They will compete in the Army's Best Medic competition in January 2025 at Fort Liberty, North Carolina.
Tripler Army Medical Center's Best Medic Competition was held August 19-22. Sgt. Nazariy Kurpita, Sgt. Jonathan Regalado, 1st Lt. Laura Selman, Sgt. 1st Class Aaron Angulo, Sgt. Jared Marsh, 1st Lt. Conor Lineberger, Sgt. Polina Gashnikova, Sgt. Carlee Goodman, Capt. Jesse Guerin and Spc. Capt. Karaline Schmitz, a Labor and Delivery nurse at Tripler Army Medical Center, was presented the Daisy Award by the hospital’s nursing leadership on Aug. 14. Schmitz is transferring to her next duty station, so the prestigious award was presented virtually.
“Capt. Karaline Schmitz is an admirable peer, mentor, and nurse. Karaline created a detailed orientation binder and implemented a preceptor program for their new nurses. She was gracious in sharing every document and took time to go through each and explain them to me,” a fellow nurse said of Schmitz’s achievements.
The Daisy Award, a prestigious recognition, is bestowed upon nurses who consistently demonstrate excellence through clinical expertise and extraordinary compassionate care. Capt. Karaline Schmitz, our honoree, is a shining example of these outstanding role models in our nursing community.
Spc. Malcolm Robertson was presented the Daisy Award for his role on the General Surgery Unit and being that extraordinary nurse. “Spc. Robertson provided effective care, showed me respect and gave me privacy. His actions made me feel like a human being," said Benny Barber.
The Daisy Award honorees are nurses who consistently demonstrate excellence through Clinical expertise and extraordinary compassionate care, and are recognized as outstanding role models in their nursing community.

"My pups Frank the Tank (English Bulldog) and Monster Mouth (French Bulldog) mean so much to me! If they aren’t causing mayhem, we like going on golf cart rides, watching the Packers win, or hanging out at the beach. They protect me, keep me company, and are always waiting for me to return from a hard Army Day no matter what. I love you guys!"

Dog Days of Summer: Meet Leia and Janice Draper
"There's a patient who gets chemo a lot," Draper shared. "I was with [the patient] after Leia performed all her tricks and asked her to help me develop a new trick. Since I can't enter all the rooms, the young patient asked me to teach Leia to wave."
What is Leia's most memorable moment?

"Bonnie is my 11-year-old pug. She brings joy to my life every day because she loves spending time with me at the beach and in the ocean here on the North Shore of O’ahu. Bonnie loves to admire and help me protect the “ilia holo I ka uaua” from a safe distance as she believes that Hawaiian monk seals are her spirit animal. Bonnie loves to go on walks with me. Bonnie loves to cuddle with me and her cute snoring helps me sleep."
