🚨URGENT! 🚨CALL TO ACTION! FOSTERS NEEDED ASAP!: We received a call from concerned dog lovers regarding a terrible situation of approx. 15 dogs in squalid conditions. The owner of the property is frail and a fall resulted in hospitalization and has been away from the home for months. Neighbors and friends tell us the authorities went to the home weeks ago and have not returned for the dogs so the neighbor continues to feed them 2x a day (owner continues to pay for food).
The dogs deserve a far better life than this and we cannot do it without YOUR help.

💜We are collaborating with our pals at Fur-Angel Foundation to get these dogs to safety. K9 Kokua will be providing field response + vet care for these innocents while Fur-Angel works hard to find foster homes. Foster homes are needed so these dogs can all be removed at once!

🏠If you can foster one or 2 of them, please contact Fur-Angel Foundation to submit a foster application right away!

🏩If you cannot foster a dog but would like to help, please click the link here - www.PayPal.me/k9kokua to make a donation in any amount or scan the QR on the flyer. With 15+ dogs suffering skin conditions and other ailments, the bills to get them healthy will be substantial. Every bit of help will add up to make a HUGE difference!

Mahalo for your love and compassion for these innocents! They are going to need a lot of TLC.

Answers to some possible questions:
-various ages and sizes of dogs from 6mon to 8+yrs old, average sizes seem to be in the 15-20lb range with a couple of them being taller looking like 25-35lbs.
-we do not know how they are with children, best not to stress them in a home with young kids who will not understand to give the dog space.
-we do not know how they are with cats - likely not good.
-not potty trained, likely very brilliant and will learn rapidly.
-likely never had a leash on or knows how to play with toys.
-they will escape if you leave them unattended in a yard.

I picked up this poor girl on Wednesday at midnight just before the Kahi powerplant headed back in to town. She was on the side of the road.. no chip. I had to drop her off at VCA in Pearl City because HHS now closes at midnight. I am so sorry for your loss. RIP pretty girl😢😞

We rarely if ever go public with things like this out if respect for the people that call us for help. But we felt compelled to share this particular event because we know it happens more often than not. You’ʻll never see it coming until it is out of control. The goal of this was to bring awareness, and if you are going through this you are not alone. We donʻt judge the people we help. We only want to make sure that they will be okay along with the pets they care for and love.

Please make a plan with provisions for your pets should something happen to you. Have a signed agreement with you and the future cargiver(s). We are all getting older, things happen, are heartbreaking and generally unexpected.

From Stray Cat TNR ...

PLEASE do not refer to a friendly cat as "feral" simply because that cat lives outside - using stray or community cat is better.

The word feral means the exact opposite 🔁 of friendly and describes temperament ONLY.

Feral DOES NOT refer to a cat who is:
❌ Dirty
❌ Ear-tipped
❌ Homeless
❌ Unaltered
❌ Injured

🤔 A feral cat can be all those things, but those things don't make him feral.

❗️ The words feral and friendly describe the cat's temperament ONLY❗️

Feral DOES refer to a cat who is:
🐈‍⬛ Unhandleable
🐈‍⬛ Unsocialized to humans
🐈‍⬛ Fearful of people
🐈‍⬛ More comfortable visiting at night

You may be asking yourself, "What difference does it make?"

Since adult 'feral' cats are not socialized to people, they are likely to be euthanized if brought to shelters, so it is in their best interest to continue living outdoors. TRAP, NEUTER, RETURN is their best option for a better life for truly feral cats.

'Friendly' outdoor cats who are thriving and don’t have identification indicating they are lost can be fixed and returned to their outdoor home or fostered and adopted after a stray hold period if those resources are available in your area.

✅️ No matter if the cat is friendly, feral, scared, stray, semi-feral, or feeder friendly, make sure all the cats you feed are spayed/neutered and vaccinated.

Update!! I was able to get 28 cats. There are roughly 13 poor cats left in the house.

Backstory: The parents own the house and lived in it. They had a caretaker (not sure how often). The dad had to go to the ER and is now at the Palolo Chinese home for rehab. Their mom suffers fron dementia and had to be removed. The caretaker who went everyday to feed the cats. I got a call from the son who lives on the mainland asking for help. I worked with the caregiver until the sister flew into town this past Sunday 8/18.
She told me not to bring the cats back. I told her that was not an option because the cats were born and raised in the house, and not the agreement I made with her brother.

I had to get HHS involved. I was advised by HHS to release them at the front of the house. They were trying to get back in. The poor cats are mostly friendly and handleable. Just very scared now. Thank you to Linda Lau took 4 of the kittens to foster who are all friendly.

I presented them with a plan to treat all the cats and work on finding placement given reasonable time. I had a few rescues and individuals kind enough to volunteer contigent upon releasing the cats back in the house. They wonʻt budge now the cats are still outside. I left them food and water, sobbing and apologizing to them as I scratched and pet each one of them as they came out of the trap.

This was the most heartbreaking TNR i have ever had.

Urgent call forelp!! I was called to a a house to TNR some cats. This is what i found. Cats running everywhere!

Letting your unneutered female out, is subjecting her to this
Taking refuge up a tree while 4 males wait to subject her to a horrible ordeal - she will try her hardest to get away - she will be chased and cornered until they manage to grab her - she will fight her attackers and suffer bites, cuts and bruises but won't win.
The noise of the attack will be ear splitting .... But yes, of course you love your cat.

She will then be pregnant, probably give birth in someone's garden or shed - not knowing when she will get food - some of the babies may die, but then so may your girl if she has a difficult birth ( then any healthy babies will also starve to death )

But of course you love your unneutered girl, as you let her outside yet again !!

Please get your cats spayed / neutered!

What say you, pals? You may have seen recent news coverage of a woman with more than 20 dogs.
Should there be a law as to how many dogs a houseless individual can care for? A law allowing authorities to intervene and impound when there are credible reports and witness statements regarding the wellbeing of those dogs? Is it even possible to create such a law without encroaching upon civil rights? Such ordinances exist for residential dwellings do, why not on the streets? If there were such a law, is it enforceable and if so, what would happen to the dogs? Is there a way to ensure the impounded dogs can go to no-kill rescues and these rescues receive recompense for vet care and other related costs?
Is there a path towards solution of decreasing the number of dogs a person is allowed to continuously roam and scavenge for food?
The reality we witness while on outreach is that the absence of such an ordinance or law often leaves dogs in the hands of some humans who are incapable of rational thought.
Our volunteers outreach to dogs within the houseless camps additionally working with those interested in seeking shelter with their dog through existing programs.
At times we encounter mentally unstable individuals and those suffering from drug-induced psychosis who refuse help for their dog - shots, wormer and sometimes even basic nail trims - leaving the innocents (dogs) to primarily fend for themselves.
Any layman knows ‘owned’ dogs should not be roaming public streets, in parks or on beaches.
Through no fault of their own, intact dogs can reach an overwhelming number of even more intact dogs creating a perpetual cycle. When dogs are primarily left to their own, there is a shift. The dogs are now living around humans, not with them. The dogs begin to run in packs and although they sometimes may seem to listen to the humans around them, the quality of life for these domesticated beings is greatly diminished and lacking of a genuine human-dog bond.
It is upsetting to encounter situations when we know someone is incapable of caring for their dogs properly. Is protecting animals so challenging because they are still viewed as property?
Thoughts?
