Time: Between 10:30am-11:30am

We commonly conduct financial and estate planning well ahead of time, but we often leave gaps in planning around the most important things that give us peace at life's close. Many of us worry about our family being left to make tough decisions for us, but we haven’t done the necessary preparation to keep that from occurring. Medical care teams often navigate uncertainty between what they can do medically and what they should do based on what’s most important to us. Learn how tools for thoughtful communication around the things that matter most build confidence in those that will be stewarding our wishes and also shift the uncertainty and fear that are associated with end-of-life towards the satisfaction of a life fully lived and a sense of peace.

Event: Legacy of Life Hawaii - "Why Register Your Decision to be a Donor" Presentation
Speaker: Cathy Nearman and transplant recipient Kyle Laconsay
Dates: March 11, 2022
Time: 1-2 pm
Cost: Free

Why does your decision matter?

Organ, eye, and tissue donations are the greatest gifts anyone, of any age, can give. The need is great, and donation is a beautiful way to pass life forward. There is a tremendous need, with 106,610 nationally. In Hawaii alone, 350 Kamaʻāina are on the state waiting list. (327- kidney, 23-liver, 2-kidney-pancreas). Today, the heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, lungs, small intestines, faces, and hands can all be transplanted. Tissue donors can improve the lives of many more people by donating cornea, heart valves, veins, tendons, bone, and skin. Your age doesn’t make you ineligible to sign up, nor do you have to be in perfect health. Your ability to donate is determined at the time of death. Research shows that organ from older donors can be used effectively to save lives. Knowing that lives have been saved by a loved one’s donation has helped many donor families deal with their grief.

You can make a difference today. Registering to be an organ, eye, and tissue donor is one of the finest and most unselfish humanitarian actions you can take.

Kyle’s journey with organ and tissue transplantation involves four corneal transplants to help correct her vision: one came through a donor from Pearl Harbor. Kyle then unexpectedly required a different transplant after she reported feeling tired to her doctor and discovered that her immune system was attacking her liver. A liver transplant saved her life. Kyle will be sharing her story with us and why she encourages everyone to consider becoming an organ donor.
