ANNA MAVROMATIS: ROMANCING THE MYTH
6-830PM
Image: In reverence, 2024. Toned cyanotype with acrylics on paper. Coffee filters printed with inks and acrylics, charred and hand formed into blossoms. 93in x 28in x 4in
Anna Mavromatis’s work is deeply intertwined with the rich tradition of storytelling that shaped her upbringing in Greece. Growing up, she saw storytelling as a metaphorical window that allowed her to witness and understand the complex emotions of life—from the turmoil of torrential storms to the serenity of sunlit landscapes. The women in her family used storytelling as a powerful tool to impart the essence of belonging, to voice the trauma of loss, and to demonstrate resilience as they reinvented themselves to overcome challenges and achieve survival.
Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce ROMANCING THE MYTH, a solo exhibition by artist Anna Mavromatis. The exhibition opens Friday, September 6, 2024 from 6PM - 8:30PM.

Joe Mancuso’s work exemplifies a contemporary perspective on still-life subject matters and abstraction, which places them in a very unique art historical context. Mancuso approaches these subject matters using non-traditional materials such as newsprint, concrete, poured latex paint, and graphite. The content provides a common thread between the paintings, yet each illustrates a distinct methodology as the forms evolve from one work to the next.

“The sculptural paintings could be seen as mirrors, portals, organisms or entities. At times they radiate a glow, are opaque or possess a thin transparent skin that reveals their interior. Collectively, these forms begin to coalesce into an imagined organic system. “ - Garrett Griffin

Nancy O’Connor expresses an authentic connection to the natural world through her rich exploration of photography. The photographs, some dating back to the 1970s, capture the specific aura of each individual. Smiling faces share the familiarity felt between the photographer and subject, with each moment in time emphasizing the presence felt in the absence of loss. While many individuals pictured are no longer with us, the photographs honor their spirit in a sentimental homage. The images vibrate with a frequency that pulls the viewer into the velvety halo surrounding the subjects.

“Welcome Table” is a homage to a place and a community of African American Cowboys long since gone that the artist has known since childhood. This exhibition highlights the presence and energy of the Greater Zion Baptist Church which was a pillar and a gathering place for all the Cowboys and their loved ones. Located on the south Texas prairies and although now empty, still stands.
For the artist, absence has created a presence that has led her into the language of souls and an archeology of memory. Her first experience in the church was when she attended the memorial service of her close friend who she loved dearly Spencer Cook in 1976.
We will be open tomorrow from 11:30am to 5pm.

Living in the question is what drives Nancy O'Connor's work. What remains when people and cultures disappear? What stories are left hovering and untold when we encounter empty spaces if we allow ourselves to perceive them? Is it possible to capture this presence in what appears to be absence?

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 27th, is the final day of the profound exhibition "RAW" by Kambel Smith
Kambel Smith is a master of his own medium. He transforms cardboard and other found objects into works that transcend beyond materiality. Each sculpture Smith creates distills the essence each iconic building possesses into a reflective experience surrounding the human touch.

Kambel was able to discover his true means of communication, creating work as an act of dedication and obsession. His intuition, and his special gift allows Kambel Smith to take the most mundane of materials and emulate the aura of iconic buildings into monumental sculptures.
Kambel Smith declares himself to be superhuman - “Autisarian,” to be exact. Redefining what it means to be autistic, Kambel approaches both his art and his
life from an extraordinary point of view.
After a difficult childhood spent struggling to communicate, Kambels father, Lonnie Smith, discovered a number of drawings Kambel had hidden in the air vent of his room out of fear that no one would understand him. These drawings depicted highly detailed and precise comic characters, the “Survivor character standing out to Lonnie. “Autisarians” were born in collaboration with Kambel, his father, and his brother, Kantai (a talented coder who also just happens to have autism), finding the power where people often forget it exists. These comics, these “Autisarians,” told the stories Kambel had never been able to express
otherwise, and became the catalyst to his artistic career.
