Indiana Freemasons' Hall

The home of Indiana Freemasonry since 1909.

02/23/2024

The Indianapolis Masonic Temple/Indiana Freemasons Hall has officially reopened as of Thursday, February 22nd. A carbon monoxide leak detected earlier in the week was from the boilers' exhaust flue. The heating system has been shut down while repairs are being conducted, the building has been completely ventilated, and it is now safe to return. Offices of the Grand Lodge of Indiana, the Indiana Masonic Home Foundation, and the Masonic Library & Museum of Indiana may reopen, and lodges and other related organizations can resume their regular meetings and events.

The ambient temperature in the building is currently in the high 60s. Mild temperatures are predicted well into March, so the building should remain comfortable for the duration of the repair project while the boilers are shut down.

02/21/2024

Attention visitors: On Wednesday morning, we had an alarm go off indicating an elevated level of Carbon Monoxide present in the Indianapolis Masonic Temple/Indiana Freemasons Hall, the location of the Masonic library & Museum of Indiana. The building has been closed and our Facilities Management team contacted the fire department and the gas company, who confirmed the reading.

According to protocol in these types of situations, all gas using equipment has been shut down, the building has been ventilated, and we have contacted our contractors to thoroughly inspect and make any needed repairs to correct the situation.

We should be able to safely open the building and restart the boilers and water heater within 24 - 48 hours. When we reopen, we shall announce it here.

Did anybody else around Indiana know this past May was Historic Preservation Month, commemorated by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources? In fact, this year's Preservation Month was specifically focused on Indiana's Fraternal Organizations.

Would have been nice to know about it ahead of time. Would have been nice if the fraternal organizations they cited had been given the chance to coordinate with the DNR – hold tours, give presentations, host talks within some of our still-operating buildings, organize driving tours of the many remaining fraternal buildings located in cities and towns all over the state... you know, that kind of stuff.

Yep, that would have been nice.

Heck, they even printed up a spiffy poster that lodges all around Indiana would have happily and proudly displayed, if they'd known about it.

Can you Show Your Support for our Masonic Youth?
Brother,
On behalf of Grand Master Richard Lentz, I am excited to again, and for the final time, extend an invitation to you and your family for Indiana Masonic Youth Day on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at the Compass Park Event Center (details on RSVP.) This event will showcase the talents of the Rainbow for Girls, Job's Daughters, and DeMolay youth from across the state, and we have over 100 youth signed up to attend but fewer than 30 Masons.
This is a unique opportunity to witness specific ceremonial work that highlights the skills of these talented youth, and we would be honored to have you join us. We hope that this event will inspire our younger members and promote the spirit of fraternity and unity within our community.

In addition, we would like to extend this invitation to your family members, as this event is open to the public. We encourage you to bring your spouse, children, or any other family members who would like to attend.

The day will start at 10:00 a.m. and will include lunch, which will be served around noon. We kindly request that you RSVP to this invitation by Monday morning, March 6, 2023, so that we can make appropriate arrangements.
We understand that your time is valuable, but we hope that you can take some time out of your schedule to join us for this special occasion. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
We look forward to seeing you at Indiana Masonic Youth Day!

Sincerely,

Suspect In Shrine Vandalism Case Now Tied to More Attacks on Illinois Masonic Halls 03/26/2022

The Decatur man accused of taking a baseball bat to the windows of the Decatur Masonic Temple and inflicting massive damage is now linked to similar attacks at Masonic lodges and facilities scattered across Central Illinois.

Howard D. Lovelady Jr is so far pleading not guilty to seven counts of criminal damage, and those only relate to attacks on the Decatur temple and the Masonic Lodge in Blue Mound. Blue Mound Police Chief Chad Lamb told the Herald & Review that Lovelady is suspected of being the culprit in other acts of criminal damage in Mattoon, Arcola and Springfield, where two lodges and the Ansar Shrine Center were hit. Lovelady is accused of using a metal baseball bat to smash glass in windows and doors in multiple attacks in January and February...(MORE)

Dwight L. Smith Lodge of Research - Guided Tour of Indiana Freemasons Hall and the Masonic Library & Museum of Indiana 03/17/2022

"Discover the Secrets of the Temple”: Indiana Freemasons Hall Tour - Saturday, April 9th 9:00 AM

Join the Dwight L. Smith Lodge of Research on Saturday, April 9th for a basement-to-rooftop guided tour of Indiana Freemasons Hall. The Indianapolis Masonic Temple - also known as Indiana Freemasons Hall - has been the headquarters of the Grand Lodge F&AM of Indiana since opening its doors over a century ago.

If you've been to Founders Day, Annual Communications, or another event at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, you might not have noticed the enormous windowless limestone Temple across the street. But even if you've been inside for a lodge meeting or visited the Masonic Library & Museum on the fifth floor, you've only seen a tiny part of this remarkable historic landmark.

When it opened in 1908, the Indianapolis Temple was declared "the finest of its kind in the Entire World" and "built to last a thousand years." Now we will take you behind the curtains and locked doors and down the back staircases to discover the Temple's many hidden features and surprises.

After the tour we will have a historical presentation about the original Freemasons Halls in Indianapolis and their importance to the community and the state of Indiana.

Tour will begin at 9:00AM

Indianapolis Masonic Temple
525 N. Meridian Street
Indianapolis, IN

Following the tour we will meet for lunch at El Toro Mexican Restaurant (formerly Acapulco Joe's) located two blocks south of the temple.

PLEASE NOTE: There are areas of the building such as the basement and the rooftop that are not handicap-friendly. Access to these areas may be severely limited or restricted altogether. Some areas are also in varying stages of renovation or disrepair. Be sure to wear clothes you won't mind getting dirty, along with comfortable shoes.

This tour is open to all - Masons, their families, and friends.
So please join us!

The Dwight L. Smith Lodge of Research U.D. will hold its traditional Founders Day meeting this Saturday, January 15th, 2022, at 3:00 PM, following the Founders Day breakout sessions and afternoon committee meetings. As has been our recent custom, the meeting will take place in the 5th floor South Lodge Room at Indiana Freemasons Hall, located at 525 N. Illinois Street (just south of the Scottish Rite Cathedral parking lot). This will be our first in-person meeting since the Covid pandemic restrictions were put in place in 2020.

The 5th floor is shared with the Masonic Library & Museum of Indiana, and it will be open for brethren to visit throughout the day.

We will have two presentations during the meeting. Junior Warden James A. Buckhorn will present 'Grip Not, Want Not: An Examination of the True Secrets of Masonry’. And Senior Warden, WB David Hosler will present, ‘Saving Fraternal History.’ Also in the schedule is a discussion of future potential field trips for our members to Masonic sites in the state.

In accordance with our by-laws, the top officers of the Dwight L. Smith Lodge of Research are not elected each year, they are appointed and serve at the will and pleasure of the Grand Master. The appointed officers for the year 2021-22 are:

Barry White, P.M. - Worshipful Master
David Hosler, P.M. - Senior Warden
James A. Buckhorn - Junior Warden
Christopher Hodapp, P.M. - Secretary

Because we are not a traditional lodge that confers degrees, we are not required to have a complete compliment of officers. Nor are we required to formally open and close the lodge in form. All Indiana Masons and brethren from jurisdictions in amity with the Grand Lodge of Indiana may attend our meetings and become members.

Finally, I’d like the opportunity to thank all of our members for their support during two of the most unusual years in recent history, and especially thank Past Grand Master Kenneth Roy, Jr. for naming me as Master for 2019-21. Grand Master Martin has appointed me as the lodge Secretary for this year, so please bear with me as I take that position from the able hands of WB John Bridegroom, who has served us well for many years. Dues notices for 2022 will be mailed out as soon as I finalize some administrative details with the Grand Lodge office.

We hope to see you on Founders Day!

Fraternally,

Christopher L. Hodapp, PM, Secretary
Dwight L. Smith Lodge of Research U.D.

It is with deepest sadness we report the passing of our Past Grand Master, John E. Grein on Saturday evening. Most Worshipful Grein served the Freemasons of the State of Indiana as its 139th Grand Master in 1989-1990, and as Grand Treasurer from 1997 to 2017. He is now at peace, again holding hands with his wife Glenda.

Please keep John and his family in your prayers.

May 2021 Meeting Postponed – Dwight L. Smith Lodge of Research U.D. 05/16/2021

As most of you know, attendance at the annual communication this year is being severely limited by lingering COVID pandemic precautions. Our usual summer meeting time has traditionally followed the Grand Officer installation on the second day of that event. However, because our Secretary John Bridegroom and myself are both expected to be at a meeting with the incoming Grand Master and his officers at that time, and since attendees at the communication will be greatly reduced this year, we have reluctantly decided to postpone our usual May meeting at this time. Please click the link below for more information.

Be aware that, if you are attending the annual communication on Tuesday and Wednesday as a voting member of Grand Lodge, the Masonic Library & Museum of Indiana will be open on both days.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Past Grand Master Ishmael D. Ison (Crown Point, Indiana), who passed away in his sleep on December 17, 2020, at the age of 81.

Most Worshipful Ison served the Freemasons of the State of Indiana as Grand Master in 1999 and 2000. During that time, he commissioned an Indiana Masonic Flag which is now proudly displayed in almost all Indiana Lodges and at many homes. The flag was designed during a contest by Brothers H. Keith Wilson, Monroe No. 22 and S.W. Douglas B. Green, Kane No. 183.

In honor of our Past Grand Master Ishmael D. Ison, Grand Master Kenneth Roy, Jr. directs all Lodges to drape the Indiana Masonic Flag with a Black Ribbon for a period of 30 days.

Please keep his wife MaryJo and the family in your prayers.

You may send cards and notes to:
MaryJo Ison
14807 Reeder Rd

The Hillside Funeral Home is currently not placing any limits on attendance provided everyone is following all PPE and social distancing guidelines. You will be required to wear a mask while inside the Funeral Home. FALL COVID-19 UPDATE FROM GRAND MASTER KENNETH ROY, JR.

I wish to thank you for your perseverance and support during the pandemic crisis. It has certainly challenged us as a fraternity and as individuals. I ask that you continue to follow all the safety guidelines outlined by our state and local authorities along with those guidelines established for degree work. Hopefully, things will continue to improve as we adjust to our current lifestyle and what the future will bring.
Please remember, if at any time you or someone you know contracts the virus and has recently attend Lodge or a Lodge function it is imperative that those in attendance be notified immediately in order to take proper precautions. This will help contain the spread of the virus and possibly save a life.
There are several items I would like to bring to your attention as we move toward the end of the calendar year. Questions have begun to come up regarding the Feast of St. John, Founders’ Day and the Past Master’s degree and associated dinners.

• Feast of St. John the Evangelist will be observed on Monday December 28, 2020 to help avoid the holiday weekend. You are encouraged to observe the celebration using all safety protocols established and in place during that time frame. If your Lodge prefers not to participate, that is perfectly OK and there will be no sanctions for not participating. If your Lodge generally is part of a larger gathering, I encourage you to consider doing the event as an individual Lodge. I cannot stress enough, following all safety protocols is imperative to help provide as safe an environment as possible.

• The Past Master’s Degree and associated dinners can be held as specified in previous correspondence, again, following all safety protocols. Be sure if you have several Lodges and many people involved that you consider having more than one evening devoted to the events or do them as an individual Lodge.

• Due to the ever changing and unpredictable Covid-19 pandemic, Founders’ Day this year will be done in a virtual format without a live audience. The event will take place on Saturday January 9, 2021 beginning at 9:00 a.m. and concluding around 12:00 p.m. EST. I hope you will be able to watch the full presentation for the education and information presented.

The event will be a combination of live and prerecorded presentations with many additional hours of preparation being needed to prepare and present Founders’ Day in this format. We will keep you informed of the schedule of events for the day as we get closer.

I hope you will gather as a group at the Lodge, a Brothers house or individually from the comfort of your own home and be part of the 2021 Founders’ Day event.

Remember to continue to practice the Art of Freemasonry by helping those in need. This includes those Lodge Members, their families and those in the community that can benefit from the generous help Freemasons can offer during times like this.

May God Bless each of you and may God Bless America!

Sincerely and fraternally,
Kenneth Roy, Jr.
Grand Master

Masons and Community: County Court Uses Masonic Hall for Jury Duty 08/05/2020

I spotted an interesting tidbit in the news today that demonstrates how a Masonic lodge can be of unique service to its surrounding community. The Masonic Center in Clinton, Iowa is being leased by the Clinton County Court as a venue for jury pool selection. According to the article on the Clinton Herald website, state and local COVID regulations about social distancing in government venues forced the court to find another, more spread out location for choosing jury pool members. The courthouse could not properly accommodate the required safe distances needed for gathering large groups of people in one space. So, the Brethren of the Clinton Masonic Center came to the rescue.

The Clinton Masonic Center is the home of the Clinton Valley of the Scottish Rite Bodies, York Rite, Western Star Lodge #100, and Emulation Lodge #255. The article doesn't say, but I suspect their 'Red Room' will be the probable location because of its size and horseshoe seating.

ANNUAL COMMUNICATION CANCELED
Released at 2PM July 2, 2020

Dear Brother,
The Grand Master and Grand Lodge Officers after careful deliberation and consideration of the current Covid-19 situation, have determined that it is not in the best interest of our Membership to hold the Annual Communication on July 14, 2020. The Annual Communication for 2020 is cancelled and the next Annual Communication will be on May 18, 2021. The current Grand Lodge Officers will continue to serve in their respective positions until May of 2021.

Official notification and additional information on Grand Lodge events will be distributed next week following the 4th of July Holiday. Lodge stated and called meetings may continue following previously outlined precautions. Degree work is not to be conducted until further notice.
We apologize for any inconvenience this decision may have caused, the health and safety of the Indiana Freemasons and their families is our top priority. Continue to follow and practice the precautions as outlined by the Governor during the holiday and into the future.

Please enjoy a safe and happy 4th of July Holiday!

Sincerely and fraternally,

05/22/2020

MAY 21ST, 2020 MESSAGE FROM GRAND MASTER KENNETH ROY, JR:

Greetings My Brother,
The television news is now reporting that every state in the country has started implementing plans to systematically relax some of the health precautions put into place during the COVID-19 pandemic. I think we can all see this as positive. Hopefully, we are starting to move from a global crisis, to a place of healing and time of recovery. My prayer now, is that our leaders will continue to work with our world health officials in making the wisest decisions possible for our welfare. The last thing we wish to do is to move too quickly and make the return of this horrid menace possible.

As Grand Master, I realized very quickly that the guidelines being formulated would be very beneficial for this fraternity. It was not a hard decision to close our lodges and follow the Governor’s recommendations. Anytime the health and welfare of this Craft comes in question, I will always take whatever action I deem best for the membership. I hope that you understand and support my actions in this matter.
The month of June will soon be upon us. As such, most lodges will resume holding Stated Meetings, Executive Committee Meetings, and some Called Meetings. However, due to distancing restrictions, we cannot yet confer degree work. The time frame for allowing the conferring of degrees has yet to be determined. We will continue to monitor the overall situation across the state, and as soon as it seems reasonably safe, we will make that decision and get back to business using the guidelines established at that moment.
Again, thank you for “hunkering down” in this time of crisis. You have shown yourself as responsible citizens of your communities and good men of this fraternity.

For now, please remember to follow these simple safety practices:

1. The Worshipful Master is responsible for maintaining a safe place to meet.
2. The Worshipful Master is responsible for adhering to Governor Holcomb’s Executive orders and the guidelines of
the CDC. This includes use of face masks and social distancing.
3. No degree work to be conducted until further notice.
4. Degree work and ritual may be practiced provided face masks and social distancing guidelines are observed.
5. Food preparation and service must be done with great care and safety.
6. Stay at least 6 feet away from others while in a shared space.
Stay Healthy and God Bless! Sincerely and fraternally,
Kenneth Roy, Jr. Grand Master
7. Wash your hands often or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
8. Wear cloth or paper face coverings.
9. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible.
10. Stay home if you are running a fever or feel ill in the slightest.
11. Clean and disinfect touched objects and surfaces.
12. Remember, you do not need to have a meeting if you do not feel comfortable having one at this time.

Stay Healthy and God Bless!
Sincerely and fraternally,
Kenneth Roy, Jr.
Grand Master
