Employment opportunity, especially for those graduating in May!!
"We are currently looking to hire an IOP facilitator/therapist. I just got permission to post this position to masters-level students who are looking to graduate in May, and I'd love to hire from the ETSU counseling program.
The idea is that we would hire, plan about 6 weeks of trainings, and then start them in the IOP facilitator/therapist after graduation. I estimate that the pay will be $40k+ with a possibility of bonuses each quarter. I am looking to hire a staff who is passionate about substance use and mental health as it is a co-morbid program. More about the groups, it is 2 separate groups for adults and adolescents (3 sessions a week per group, totaling 18 hours a week). Plus, they'd get weekly supervision with me and a pretty solid team to support them.😉 The biggest downside is that the adolescent group is after school hours, typically 4-7pm during the week when school is in session. If you have anyone who is interested, could you please encourage them to apply online?"

Natural spaces are a vital component to wellness but continue to be targeted for economic development. Currently, Johnson City Parks and Recreation is open to hearing community voices about the future of Buffalo Mountain.
Buffalo Mountain Park serves as a nature preserve, hiking destination, and place for peace and tranquility just outside the city. Buffalo Mountain has rich biodiversity and is uniquely resilient against the impacts of climate change. "I am writing to share of several openings within our Outpatient areas, and asking if you could please cascade to any alumni as we search for both license-track and licensed therapists. Currently, we have opportunities within our Johnson City clinic for Adult and Children and Adolescent therapists. We will be moving into our large, new space at 701 Med Tech Parkway the end of February with so much new space that is such a gift to all! In addition, I also have openings in our Kingsport clinic, which is on the Indian Path campus. For all of these openings, telehealth to clients is an option, from home, as well as having the option to create one's own schedule- e.g. working 3 12's (7a-7p). or any other variation throughout the week.
In our Virginia market, we have availability in our Abingdon Behavioral Health clinic, which is inside a Primary Care office.
For our newer opportunities, we also have opportunities inside a Pediatric clinic in Kingsport, as well as inside the Unicoi School system, for therapists interested in a more independent and unique opportunity with Children and Adolescent populations.
Feel free to share my direct email with anyone who would like to contact me for further discussion.

Hello Counselor Educators!
My name is Christy Oaks (she/they), and I am a doctoral candidate at the University of the Cumberlands, working on my dissertation under the supervision of Dr. LoriAnn Stretch ([email protected]) in the Department of Counseling. I am also employed at East Tennessee State University as Clinic Director and Clinical Instructor with the Counseling Program. I am conducting a transcendental phenomenological qualitative study titled, “Loud and q***r: Amplifying LGBTQIA+ CES experiences in higher education.” This study is to fulfill requirements for a doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision and has been approved by both the University of the Cumberland’s IRB ( #1596-0923) and East Tennessee State University’s IRB ( #0011490).
The purpose of this study is to amplify the voices of LGBTQIA+ CES faculty who’ve worked for at least three years in a CACREP accredited counseling program and their experiences with power, privilege, and oppression in higher education. Results from this study will be used to inform the counseling field, and for degree, publication, and presentation purposes.
Prospective participants:
• Must be at least 18 years of age;
• Must identify within the LGBTQIA+ community;
• Must have at least three years' experience working as a counselor educator/supervisor in a CACREP accredited counseling program; and
• Must have access to web-enabled video and audio technology.
What to expect: Participation in this study is voluntary and participants may withdraw at any time. Participants will participate in a 60-90-minute online interview, review themes and salient quotes, and participate in a short follow-up interview. Participants who meet the inclusion criteria will be emailed a copy of the informed consent upon completion of demographics survey and begin scheduling the interview.
If you are interested in participating in this study, please complete a brief demographics survey by clicking the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScNkzXAynB04GE62hsRW8Ck8i9oF11xegMr1_L7TwQVvGbZYg/viewform
Also, if you know an LGBTQIA+ counselor educator/supervisor that might meet the study criteria, please forward this email to them!
If you have questions, email me at [email protected]. My Dissertation Chair, Dr. LoriAnn Stretch can be reached at [email protected]
Thank you for your interest, consideration, and support!

Body Scanning - a mindfulness exercise
Laying down on your back with your legs fully extended, focus on your breath.
Acknowledging the sounds around you and thoughts in you, imagine each is a leaf in a river and let the leaves float past you.
Starting at the top of your head, bring attention to each part of your body moving downwards - scalp, face, jaw, neck, shoulders, chest, abdomen, back, and down your arms and legs. As you notice tension, intentionally relax those areas.
Once you reach your toes, make your way back up your body. When you're ready, you can sit up and return to the present moment.
Practicing body scanning can be done in stressful moments as well, like before a big exam or presentation
Check out this video for more information on body scanning - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLpChrgS0AY&t=75s
Your heart has been beating since day one and it keeps you alive. Taking a moment to feel your heartbeat can let you focus on your thoughts and calm your emotions. Try the exercise in the link below (or on the next slide) and see how it works for you.

Consider someone in your life who has had a beneficial influence on you, whether it's a teacher, coach, friend, or mentor. Reflect on the significance they held in your life and the ways in which they transformed your path. Expressing gratitude for this individual can alleviate anxiety and enhance your ability to rest peacefully.

Mindfulness is a superpower.
Mindfulness can provide awareness of thoughts and feelings without becoming overwhelmed or consumed by them. It can help you respond wisely and more purposefully rather than reacting blindly.
Dr. B Novotny, in conjunction with the ETSU Counseling Center, will be hosting forest walks Monday's at 3:30 beginning this Monday, Sept 11.
The walks will start from the gazebo near the university woods in parking lot 13. Not sure where that is? Check out this map, towards the bottom right next to the green area labeled University Woods/Trail System -https://www.etsu.edu/ehome/documents/etsu-campusmap.pdf
Welcome to our new series,
We know it's Tuesday, but we still wanted to get started sharing these because we're just so excited about them!
So what is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we are doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what's going on around us. This can looking like a lot of things depending on what works for you. Maybe it's a breathing exercise, maybe it's yoga, maybe it's going into a situation with the intention of being present and focused.
