ETSU concert bands is an information page about the concert bands that are open to all students at East Tennessee State University. We have two bands, Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Christian Zembower, and Concert Band, directed by Dr. Joe Moore. Wind Ensemble are compressed with students from an audition process and Concert Band is comprised of students who don't with to audition, but want to be apart of a band.

Join us Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28, 2023, for the 44th Annual ETSU High School Honor Bands Festival, which will be hosted in the Martin Center for the Arts.

Guest Conductors:

GOLD BAND
Dr. Erika Svanoe is a conductor, composer, and educator, currently serving as the Conductor of the Augsburg Concert Band at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prior to joining the Augsburg faculty, she was Director of Bands at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, MN, and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of New Hampshire.

Dr. Svanoe earned a D.M.A. in conducting from the Ohio State University, an M.M. in Wind Conducting from Oklahoma State University, and a B.M.E. from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She is an active freelance composer and won The National Band Association Young Band Composition Contest in 2014 with her composition, The Haunted Carousel. She currently lives in Menomonie, WI with her husband, designer and graphic novelist Erik Evensen.

BLUE BAND
Dr. Susan D. Creasap is Professor Emerita of Music and former Associate Director of Bands and Interim Director of Bands at Morehead State University. Dr. Creasap earned her Doctor of Arts in Wind Band Conducting/Horn Performance from Ball State University, Master of Arts in Music Education/Music History from the University of Minnesota, and Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Creasap’s career included teaching band/orchestra in the public schools of Meadville, Pennsylvania and Memphis, Tennessee; horn instructor at Allegheny College (PA); freelance horn player; and Director of Bands/Horn Professor at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Creasap is a Research Associate for the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series. Her dissertation, American Women Composers of Band Music, 1865-1996, was named the Ball State University School of Music “Outstanding Dissertation” and her Master’s thesis, Johannes Brahms and the Horn, earned the University of Minnesota School of Music “Excellence in Scholarship” award. Her clinic presentations include the Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference, Kansas State Honor Band Clinic, Women Band Directors International Summer Conferences, College Band Directors National Association Athletic Bands Symposium, and The Midwest Clinic and earned the Women Band Directors International Silver Baton, Kentucky Music Educators Association University Teacher of the Year, and Bandmaster of the Year (2017) by the Kentucky Chapter of Phi Beta Mu.
Dr. Creasap is the Mentor Coordinator for the National Band Association, Chair of the National Band Association Foundation, Treasurer of the Women Band Directors International Foundation, and has held numerous other national, regional, state, and district leadership positions. She is a guest conductor and adjudicator throughout the country. Dr. Creasap and her husband, Dr. John Hennen, reside in Virginia and are active in animal rescue.

Caton, III, and his remarkable forty-six-year career with the East Tennessee State University Department of Music.
