Congratulations to Dr. Michael Stollenz on the publication of his latest article! You can read “Twisted and Disconnected Chains: Flexible Linear Tetracuprous Arrays and a Decanuclear CuI Cluster as Blue- and Green/Yellow-Light Emitters” at https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.inorgchem.4c01646 or in the ACS Publications Inorganic Chemistry journal.
Twisted and Disconnected Chains: Flexible Linear Tetracuprous Arrays and a Decanuclear CuI Cluster as Blue- and Green/Yellow-Light Emitters Defined arrays of transition metal ions embedded in tailored polydentate ligand scaffolds allow for a systematic design of their physical properties. Such molecular strings of closed-shell transition metal centers are particularly interesting for Group 11 metal ions in the oxidation state +1 if they...
Congratulations to Dr. Mohammad Halim on the publication of his latest article! You can read “Structure-Guided Antiviral Peptides Identification Targeting the HIV-1 Integrase” at https://doi.org/10.1021/acsphyschemau.4c00006 or in the ACS Publications Physical Chemistry Au journal.
Structure-Guided Antiviral Peptides Identification Targeting the HIV-1 Integrase HIV-1 integrase (IN), a major protein in the HIV life cycle responsible for integrating viral cDNA into the host DNA, represents a promising drug target. Small peptides have emerged as antiviral therapeutics for HIV because of their facile synthesis, highly selective nature, and fewer side effects.....

In recognition of Women's History Month, Kennesaw State University is honoring faculty researchers who are making new discoveries, solving complex issues, and driving important discussions.
Professor of chemistry Carol Chrestensen is one of our many female faculty members making a difference in science and mathematics research. While her research has implications for the development of new medicine and emerging treatments for a variety of health issues, she cares just as much about her work serving as a building block for future researchers.

Congratulations to Biochemistry alumna Dr. Elizabeth Draganova on receiving a National Institute of Health’s Director’s New Innovator Award for 2023! Draganova worked in Dr. John Haseltine's laboratory as an undergraduate at KSU, where she learned valuable lessons from him about being a mentor and now incorporates them into her own laboratory at Emory University.
Congratulations to Kennesaw State University alumna Elizabeth Draganova (Biochemistry, ’11), who recently received a National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s Director’s New Innovator Award for 2023, an award designed to support exceptionally creative scientists with highly innovative research that includes a $1.3 million grant. Draganova is an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the Emory University School of Medicine. She hopes her research will contribute to a vaccine or cure for herpesviruses, specifically Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1), which is a neuroinvasive virus infecting 70 percent of the human population.

It all began with a high school English essay assignment that required Ra’Nya Malone to interview someone in her chosen career field. Acting on her aunt's recommendation, Ra’Nya interviewed Dr. Carl Saint-Louis, an assistant professor of chemistry at Kennesaw State University. This conversation inspired Ra’Nya to enroll as a biochemistry major at KSU and in just three semesters, she has already made an impact. She became a part of the Saint-Louis Laboratory during her first semester, co-authored a paper published in a prestigious journal, and received two summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) opportunities as a first year student. And she’s just getting started.

Congratulations to Dr. Carol Chrestensen on her recent grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)!
Professor of chemistry Carol Chrestensen was recently awarded a three-year, $405,650 grant from the National Institutes of Health to further investigate the protein and enzyme binding process with help from undergraduate researchers. Her research sheds light on conditions such as artery blockage and cancers, like breast cancer, that can spread to other parts of the body. In addition to purchasing materials for her lab, Chrestensen said the grant will go toward paying undergraduates as lab researchers.
