The Little-Known Capitalist History of the Highway Map - Motherboard 02/26/2017

Cartography + Capitalism

The Little-Known Capitalist History of the Highway Map - Motherboard The author John Steinbeck once remarked that "maps are not reality at all—they can be tyrants."Take road maps, for example. These maps aren't just designed to provide geographic and navigational information. Since the early 1900s, road maps have been designed to advance capitalism, promoting the ven...

The Secret, Contentious History of Maps 07/26/2016

An interesting article about how breakthroughs in the field of mapmaking are typically accompanied by some sort of conflict, controversy or attempt to repudiate one’s scientific forbears.

The Secret, Contentious History of Maps A new book shows that mapmaking, from today’s Google Earth and GPS navigation to Ptolemy in the second century, has always been a quarrelsome science.

Web App Reveals How Misleading Maps Really Are 06/06/2016

If you grew up thinking Greenland was bigger than India, or that Alaska was the size of Brazil, you probably learned geography from a Mercator map. Originally created in the 16th century for sailors, the immensely popular Mercator map eventually made its way into 20th century elementary schools, where, for decades, it left all of us confused about the relative sizes of countries around the world.
Fortunately, if you’re still befuddled by the sizes of our planet’s land masses, there’s now a simple way to rectify that. WIRED reports that a new web app called The True Size Of, created by James Talmage and Damon Maneice, makes it easy to see how big different countries are and lets you compare them to their distorted representation on the Mercator projection.

This is a great article for those of you who are new the GIS field or have just graduated. Just knowing how to create a pretty map is quickly becoming a widely accessible skill set in the business world. Hell, even non-GIS folks can place locations on a Google Map these days. If you want to move up quickly into those positions that pay well, are engaging, and position to be a leader, then learn a programming language. Python, SQL, Javascript.... Apply it to as much as you can! You will find that instead of you searching for jobs, they will begin to come your way.

GIS data is growing, here’s how to keep up… – Kuba Konczyk GIS data is growing, here’s how to keep up… There’s more and more GIS data every day. Every hour and every minute. And there will be more spatial data in the future. Much more. And here’s what’s interesting: you can still access most of it using SQL. There’s no other tool that powerful. Yet it is st...

This past week was intense – the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere made landfall, just missing major population centers and avoiding catastrophic damage. Three days later, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck near the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan. Immediately the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team activated, and hundreds of volunteers around the world began mapping these vulnerable areas to help first responders, aid organizations, and the local governments."

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team HOT has activated to support the response to the 2015 Eastern Afghanistan Earthquake, which hit remote areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan on Monday the 26th October.
