Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Nahla Bendefaa. Nahla is from Kenitra, Morocco. She is pursuing M.A. in Communications Studies. Her favorite places are Tree City Coffee and Venice Cafe. You can meet Nahla in person during the GSO at the breakout session "Avoiding Burnout" on Thursday, August 16th, and "Leader Lounge" on Friday, August 17th. Her advice to new KSU graduate students: "Don’t shy away from getting involved with events from other departments and units! Be very meticulous in selecting an advisor as that is the person that will support you throughout your time at Kent State."
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Joe Bean. Joe calls hometown two places: Sikeston Missouri and Libertyville, Illinois. He is pursuing his PhD in History. Joe's favorite places are Kent Free Library and coffee roasters Tree city Cofee and Scribbles Coffee. You can meet Joe during the GSO in the breakout sessions "Graduate School Finances" on Thursday, August 16th, and "Fundamental Principles of Effective Teaching" on Friday, August 17th. His advice to new KSU graduate students: "Get a calendar, a clock and a book. Keep track of your schedule and deadlines with the calendar; keep track of your time with the clock; and have the book ready to read during your ‘free’ time."
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Ashley Davis. Ashley is from East Liverpool, Ohio. She is pursuing his PhD in Biomedical Science - Cellular Molecular Biology. her favorite place is Insomnia Cookies. You can meet Ashley during the GSO in the breakout sessions "TA in a Science Lab" on Friday, August 17th. Her advice to new KSU graduate students: "Never be afraid to ask questions!"
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Aubrey Crosby. Aubrey is from Lakewood, Ohio. She is pursuing her PhD in English - Literacy, Rhetoric, and Social Practice. You can meet Aubrey during the GSO in the breakout sessions "Blackboard - Behind the Scene" on Friday, August 17th. Her advice to new KSU graduate students:
"It feels monstrous, momentous, and at times, impossible – but this is just one chapter in a much larger work of your life. Don’t lose sight of that."
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Morgan Chaney. Morgan is from Fairborn, Ohio. He is pursuing his PhD in Biomedical Science - Biological Anthropology. Morgan's favorite place is his home, on his couch surrounded by his wife and three cats. You can meet Morgan during the GSO in the breakout sessions "Graduate School Finances" on Thursday, August 16th, and "TA in a Science Lab" on Friday, August 17th. His advice to new KSU graduate students: "Take stock of how much money you'll have coming in and make up a formal budget early on. Then, monitor how much money you spend with an app or whiteboard… Additionally, make sure that you know about all of the awards that GSS gives out to sponsor conference travel and research!"
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Danielle French. Danielle is from Woodbridge, Virginia. She is pursuing her PhD in Political Science. Favorite Place in Kent is Scribbles Coffee. Danielle presents in the breakout sessions "Conferences and Publications" on Thursday, August 16th. Her advice to new KSU graduate students: "Don’t put your life on hold when starting a new program of study. Make friends, join a gym, and maintain all elements of health because your emotional, mental, and physical health are vital to your success in academia…You’re here at KSU for a reason, but you are also a multi-faceted person, so prioritize things that contribute to your overall wellbeing."
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Preya Bhattacharya. Preya is from Kolkata, India. She is pursuing her PhD in Political Science. Preya's favorite place in town is Kent Free Library. You can meet Preya during the GSO in the breakout sessions "Grad School 101" on Thursday, August 16th, and "Syllabus and Grading" on Friday, August 17th. Preya's advice to new KSU graduate students: "Try to set daily, manageable goals and maximize your study time."
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Rosann Gage. Rosann is from Broadview Heights, Ohio. She is pursuing her PhD in Translation Studies. Her favorite place in town is Peace, Love, & Little Donuts. You can meet Rosann during the GSO in the breakout sessions "Leader Lounge" on Thursday, August 16th, and "Syllabus and Grading" on Friday, August 17th. Rosann's advice to new KSU graduate students: "Set daily, achievable goals to help you progress. There will be times when you need to get things done and you must be ready to throw yourself into the challenge and to ask for what you need. Empower yourself: the only person capable of making your life better is you. Learn to let go of things that keep you from your goals. When in doubt, breathe. Make connections with people and make it a point to keep contact with them. Enjoy what you do."
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Odeh Halaseh. Odeh is from Akron, Ohio. He is pursuing his PhD in Political Science. His favorite place in Kent is Tree City Coffee. You can meet Odeh at the breakout session "Fundamental Principles of Effective Teaching" on Friday, August 17th. His advice to new KSU graduate students: "Graduate school is a marathon, not a sprint. Do not get discouraged by minor setbacks"
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Victoria Reynolds. Victoria is from Parma, Ohio. She is pursuing her PhD in Sociology. You can meet Victoria during the GSO in the breakout sessions "Leader Lounge" on Thursday, August 16th, and "Blackboard - Behind the Scene" on Friday, August 17th. Victoria's advice to new KSU graduate students: Don’t be nervous if you don’t know exactly what you want to do in your career. Graduate school is a process that allows you to figure out your passions and create a plan for your future. Also, never underestimate the power of friendships to help you get through stressful times!"
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Julian Roland. Julian is from Bordeaux, France. He is pursuing his PhD in Translation Studies. Julian's favorite place in town is Scribbles Coffee. You can meet Julian during the GSO in the breakout sessions "Leader Lounge" on Thursday, August 16th, and "First Time TA" on Friday, August 17th. His advice to new KSU graduate students: "Your world can easily become one-dimensional: same department, same schedule, same people. I think it is important to do a few things to spice things up a bit. Join an organization, go to a Cavs game or a yoga class… and keep in touch with people you met at GSO (graduate student socials are a great way to do that)!!! GSO is a unique opportunity to meet people with diverse interests and backgrounds."
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Sommer Sterud. Sommer is from Steubenville, Ohio. She is pursuing her PhD in English -Literacy, Rhetoric, and Social Practice. Sommer's favorite place in town is Ray's. You can meet Sommer during the GSO in the breakout sessions "Leader Lounge" on Thursday, August 16th, and "First Time TA" on Friday, August 17th. Sommer's advice to new KSU graduate students: “Everyone in graduate school is smart. This can be maddening as you find your place in an often very competitive arena, but remember ‘everyone’ includes you. When professors and peers push back on your ideas, they are merely being helpful… Learning how to take constructive criticism is essential to grad students' sanity and success.”
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Ilfa Zhulamanova. Ilfa is from Aktyubinks, Kazakhstan. She is pursuing her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. Ilfa's favorite place in Kent is Fred Fuller Park. You can meet Ilfa at the Leader Lounge during the GSO in Thursday, August 16th, and in the breakout session "Culturally Responsive Teaching" on Friday, August 17th. Ilfa's advice to new KSU graduate students: “Be proactive, communicative, try new things, learn to take risk, constantly challenge yourself, and stay open to new possibilities.”
Meet GSO Teaching Fellow Anuj Gurung. Anuj is from Kathmandu, Nepal. He is pursuing his PhD in Political Science. Favorite Place in Kent is Last Exit Books. Anuj presents in the breakout sessions "Conferences and Publications" on Thursday, August 16th. Anuj's advice to new KSU graduate students: "Intellectual curiosity is crucial in academic life; it is just as important to establish a support group – from fellow cohort to mentors to family members – to help you move forward."
