Blast Off Into an Aerospace Career

On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 6 P.M.to 7 P.M., students with space-related interests gathered in the Kent State University Aeronautics and Engineering building to hear an “out of this world” presentation from Jeff Woytach, an aerospace engineer working at the NASA Glenn Research Center since 1983. The room was bustling with students eager to hear about Woytach’s career highlights while working with NASA. And if his wonderful speech was not enough of a treat, the event team offered some delicious star-shaped cookies to snack on.

Congratulations to the 19 students who were inducted into the Kent State University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Society earlier this month.

Membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society is indeed a rare honor. Only about 1% of graduating undergraduate students in the United States each year are invited to join PBK, having demonstrated remarkable scholarship in the liberal arts and sciences.

Lifelong members of Phi Beta Kappa include 17 U.S. Presidents, 42 Supreme Court Justices and over 150 Nobel laureates.

Rockstars! We have worked hard over the last month to support our Honors students, so now we’ve increased our goal!

Let’s keep going and growing the Honors College Emergency Tuition Fund!

Happy Giving Tuesday!

Our Giving Tuesday featured fund campaign culminates with the international day of giving TOMORROW, Nov. 28, 2023.

On this special day, the Kent State University Foundation sets aside $100,000 to match donors – dollar-for-dollar – on gifts up to $1,000 made to any KSU Foundation fund (while matching funds last).

But be quick! We've heard this match runs out fast. We suggest staying up until the clock strikes midnight and Nov. 28 begins, OR be an early bird (like our mascot FLASH) and wake up before the sun rises to ensure your gift to the Kent State Honors College Emergency Fund is matched dollar-for-dollar by the KSU Foundation fund!

Before sophomore Honors College student Jesse Thompson came to Kent State in 2022 from Cincinnati, Ohio, he often watched HGTV with his father– a handy man around the house who was often building things. With that influence, Jesse decided to major in construction management.

He chose to complete his required internship last summer and had the opportunity to work for Meyers Brothers & Sons, a contractor in Millville, Ohio. The company specializes in residential custom design, build and remodel projects. Here, Jesse utilized his knowledge gained from his coursework, including the construction methods and materials course.

“There was stuff in my classes I had last year that I remember learning about, hearing, but don't really understand what it is fully,” he said. “To be out on the job, I kind of hear this stuff pop up and… put together what it actually is.”

While learning new things all throughout his experience, he worked on various projects with the company and had responsibilities of framing, building and demolishing.

The NASA-affiliated Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland, was founded in 1981 as the home base for Space Telescope operations. Now, it similarly functions as the center for science operations of the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes (JWST).

The institute offers internships with its Space Astronomy Summer Program and receives hundreds of applicants every year. With just a small percent chance of acceptance, only 15 applicants were offered internships with the summer program, including Honors College student Turaba Rahman.

The junior physics major, who has a concentration in research and is pursuing a minor in applied mathematics, described her experience as a “dream come true,” and happily claimed the title of research intern.

“I was flabbergasted,” she eagerly said. “I was so astonished."
