Welcome Truman University Students
Welcome to our evenings and weekends library assistant Alex Crawford.
Alex graduated from Truman State with a BA in English earlier this year. While attending college, she worked at the school's Writing Center for three years and participated in several extracurricular activities, such as Marching Band and different dance organizations. She has gained many interests throughout her college career, but she is looking forward to working with students and staff at the ATSU Library. When she's not working, Alex enjoys reading, tending to plants, dancing, and most importantly, writing. Her goal is to work jobs such as this one, and work on publishing novels and poetry on the side.
Welcome to our new Liaison and Communications Librarian, Laura Barkema
Laura graduated with a BA in History and Biology from Wartburg College in 2011 and in 2012 graduated from University of Pittsburgh with her Masters in Library and Information Science.
While at Pitt, Laura participated in the Health Sciences track where she volunteered and interned at two separate hospital libraries in Pittsburgh. After graduation, Laura became a Reader and Information Services Librarian at the Boston Public Library in Boston, MA where she worked for just over five years. Following her time in Boston, she moved to La Vergne, TN and worked for Ingram Content Group as a Collection Development Librarian for another five years. Her experience has been varied, but she is ultimately very excited for this new role with ATSU in achieving what she set out to do upon first entering grad school - become a health sciences librarian.
When she's not working, Laura enjoys reading, trying new restaurants and breweries, pet-sitting, and above all else, she loves to travel. Laura has been lucky enough to visit 67 countries, 17 of which she visited in the last year while on a career break. While the last year of travel has been amazing (and feel free to ask her more about it), she's really looking forward to settling into her new home and role in Mesa.

Still University’s Kirksville, Missouri, campus library from July 1-Aug. 10, 2024, in partnership with the Physician Assistant History Society.
The traveling banner exhibition explores how the physician assistant (PA) profession developed to meet the social and healthcare needs of the mid-20th century and continues to evolve today. Collaboration has been the profession’s foundation since the first three PAs graduated from Duke University in 1967. PAs practice medicine alongside doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, treating patients in diverse communities and addressing healthcare shortages.

Data & Health Statistics
Data: are the raw numbers, counts of individual events or services, collected at local, national, etc. levels
As a research, some best practices:
Build strong file naming and cataloging conventions
Carefully consider metadata for data sets
Data storage
Documentation
Statistics: Data analyzed and summarized; most data on websites are compiled, and statistics, are presented as percentages, graphs, tables, maps, etc.
Best Practices:
Should answer your scientific questions
Make sure you have quality data to represent your question
Keep it simple
Make your analysis reproducible

Join ATSU in celebrating LOVE DATA Week: Research Data Management.
What is Research Data Management?
Research Data Management, also known as RDM, is the management of data used or generated during the research process, with the goal of ensuring that the data is usable by future researchers for further research, analysis, and the validation of completed research.
https://guides.atsu.edu/DataServices
NIH Policy:
In 2023, the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy was created and required that all NIH-funded research describe in detail how scientific data will be shared and managed in a usable format. Data is also required to be preserved within a specialized repository whenever ethically and legally possible. The data management and sharing plan is a 2-page document that proactively plans for how you will manage your data throughout the research process, and how you will share your data upon completion of the project. https://sharing.nih.gov/sites/default/files/flmngr/DMS_flyer.pdf
Best Practices for Research Data Management
· Increase research reproducibility
· Increase public trust in research
· Allows for the replication and validation of research
· Enables other researchers to reuse data and avoid research waste
· Helps researchers find, use, and interpret their own data during the research process
Join ATSU in celebrating LOVE DATA Week: Sharing Your Data and Copyright Fair Use
What Are FAIR Principles?
Set of guiding principles to help researchers and the data-sharing community to ensure research data to be shared in ways that enhance reproducibility and transparency. They go beyond the act of just sharing data, and ensure data has value once it is shared. The four principles are that data should be:
Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.
Why Share Your Data
Allows researchers to build upon the work of others if it is already exist
Increases visibility and opportunities for future collaborations
Increases data circulation and use, encouraging transparency and reproducibility of results to the public.
