July is Bebe Moore Minority Mental Health Month. NAMI represents the interests of all people with mental health conditions, yet all people with mental health conditions do not have the same level of access to care and do not receive the same quality of care. Racism is a public health threat, and racial inequities within the mental health care system are well documented.

What Is 988?

988 is the three-digit dialing code connecting people to the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline, where compassionate, accessible care and support is available for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress — whether that is thoughts of su***de, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also contact 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.

The goal of the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline is to provide immediate crisis intervention and support. When someone contacts 988, a trained crisis counselor will answer, listen to the person, provide support and share resources, as needed. Crisis counselors are trained to help in a variety of crisis situations, and no one is required to disclose any personal information.

Although women of other races and ethnic backgrounds may also experience mental health disorders during and after pregnancy, Black maternal and mental health organizations report that Black women are at higher risk for these ailments because of the pervasiveness of racism and racial discrimination.

The book Service Denied explores the effect of war on veterans of color across generations and the different ways the military further marginalized service members from minority groups. “Our service never ends. Once we sign that line and we give our oath and we ship out, we’ve taken on a lifetime of service,” David Carlson says about veterans fighting for a second chance. What happens at the intersection of mental health and one’s experience as a member of the Black community? While the experience of being Black in America varies tremendously, there are shared cultural factors that play a role in helping define mental health and supporting well-being, resiliency and healing.

Indigenous/Native communities in the U.S. shoulder many burdens, including economic and political marginalization, education disparities, discrimination and mental health challenges rooted in a long history of trauma. Preservation of cultural identities, practices, and belief systems are protective factors for mental health, in addition to adequate mental health support and resources.

Mental health conditions do not discriminate based on race, color, gender or identity. Anyone can experience the challenges of mental illness regardless of their background. However, background and identity can make access to mental health treatment much more difficult. Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 2008 to start changing this.

JULY is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

“Once my loved ones accepted the diagnosis, healing began for the entire family, but it took too long. It took years. Can’t we, as a nation, begin to speed up that process? We need a national campaign to destigmatize mental illness, especially one targeted toward African Americans…It’s not shameful to have a mental illness. Get treatment. Recovery is possible.”

– Bebe Moore Campbell, 2005

We are so excited to be part of this initiative!

🌍 Join us in celebrating the incredible work of Thurston Thrives and our partners for their commitment to improving our community’s health! 🤝🌱

Thurston Thrives pilots a community information exchange to improve community health.

With a decade of experience, Thurston Thrives has been dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all people in Thurston County with a priority to mobilize efforts and close health equity gaps. Over the past several years, Thurston Thrives has built a strong partnership with Kaiser Permanente Thrive. Together, we are working on the Thurston County Networking Referral Platform Pilot, an initiative that aims to establish and sustain a community information exchange using the Unite Us platform.

The following eight participating community-based organizations, CIELO, Thurston County Food Bank, NAMI, Peer Olympia, Family Support Center of South Sound, Intercity Transit, Mi Chiantla, and The Evergreen State College have been able to get to know each other and their services in the last several months. Gathering in small groups has allowed organizations to figure out how they can be successful by finding common ground, discussing referral needs and learning about what’s important to them.

These organizations will be using the “Unite Us” technology to send and receive closed-loop referrals. This pilot program will engage community organizations and address the need for improved health equity in our community.
