Thanks to an over-exposure to sitting, it can be quite easy for our spines to become stiff. Poor shapes and postures often create areas of increased load which are forced to stiffen and tighten as a result.
Considering the spine is essentially our centerpiece, stiffness throughout can have mechanical consequences for so many other areas. Our arm and leg function can become compromised and even our ability to breathe effectively and efficiently can suffer.
With in mind it's important to have some strategies to try and combat this dysfunction.

If there's one exercise to add to your routine in 2022, make it the Couch Stretch!
It has the ability to quickly improve your hip and thigh mobility leading to a much happier low back, hip, and knee!
This amazingly effective mobility exercise is best performed on a chair (or couch) but can be done on the ground for those that are up for more of a challenge.
The idea is to initially place your knee into the back corner of the chair/wall while leaning forward horizontally. Then, as your mobility allows, slowly extend more vertically from your hips until you feel an unmistakable tightness at the front of your hip/thigh.
Then, tense up your glutes and thigh for 5-10 seconds and then relax. Repeat as often as you feel comfortable making sure togo further into the stretch as things begin to loosen.

Dysfunction here could be the underlying cause of those stitches and is (thankfully) easily addressed!

We provide physical therapy services for a diverse range of patient-related problems including spinal rehabilitation, post-surgical rehabilitation, sports and work-related injuries, posture and gait training, higher-functioning neurological impairments and chronic pain.
