The name of the award was changed to honor the memory of John Oliver Simon, one of the Bay Area’s most beloved poets, who passed away in January 2018. John Simon worked many years to advance the California Poets in the Schools program and inspired the Nevada Poets in the Schools program.

This Saturday on Zoom! 💻
Please join Poet Laureate Emeritus Bruce Isaacson on Sat, March 30, 2024 for a Zoom! reading & discussion on Jack Hirschman, 1933-2021.
A committed communist, anti-fascist, and community activist, who began as a tenure-track professor at Dartmouth and UCLA. He was fired for giving students grades for the purpose of avoiding the Vietnam draft. Jack was also one of America’s foremost translators of poetry, including the first English Artaud Anthology (City Lights), Pier Paolo Pasolini, and others. His poems include a fair amount of what might be called agit-prop which can challenge modern readers.
“Arcane” was merely what Jack named his longer poems, one excellent of which, The Satin Arcane, was first published on Zeitgeist and has recently been reissued. I believe Jack’s achievement in The Arcanes and other poems have not yet been assimilated by American poetry, yet will be. Among the agit-prop, historical verse, translations, and poignant views of the underclass, Jack was also a great personal poet.

This Saturday we will have a Zoom Reading and Discussion with featured Author David Duncan from his new book Paper Fortune Teller.
Those of you who join on Saturdays know David Duncan has been writing some really strong poems. They’re frequently funny, but never only that. They reach out through the ones we’ve known and loved with intuitive recognition. The poems are always clever, often poignant, and also filled with joy. Joy at living and being the sometimes twisted, imperfect creatures that we be.
An open reading will follow the feature.
