Sending off Ming and Laura-Marie with a going away party of love, music, delicious breakfast foods, and a special zine. :) Thank you for everything.
We celebrated the Las Vegas Catholic Worker birthdays of March with a courtyard party at the Bartlett place. There was cornbread, beans, lentils, curry, rice, chicken with rosemary, soda, chocolate cake. These delicious foods were complimented by music, laughter, prayer, and a beautiful trilobite-centric sculpture made by Gary.
Thank you to all who contributed food, art, smiles, friendship. We love you. May we be blessed with energy to continue the work of peace long into our old age!
Christmas dinner shared by the Las Vegas Catholic Workers was warm and connected us after a year of changes. Eddie smiled while receiving the gift of a Coca Cola apron. Gary read a beautifully typeset poem aloud. John was happy to receive black licorice. Julia Occhiogrosso liked special socks. Ming enjoyed the rainbow trilobite embroidered for him by Laura-Marie. Robert Majors got a book about caring for houseplants.
The tamales were delicious. We feel grateful to nourish one another. Happy new year to all.
The serving for Christmas morning was special, with song, warmth, and delicious foods. Thank you for the work you do to spread love and feed the hungry.
Many volunteers prepared delicious treats for hungry people, at this cookie decorating party, a Las Vegas Catholic Worker tradition. Love to the friendship and sharing.
An early Thanksgiving feast for the Las Vegas Catholic Worker at Bartlett this year gave us a chance to gather with love. We were grateful for friendship, one another, life itself, everything, roses, fall, perfect weather, open windows, pumpkin spice bread, vegan options, the colorful shirt that belonged to a friend's mom. Thank you to Creator for the gifts we receive.
The Las Vegas Catholic Worker house was featured in Preservation Magazine, Spring 2021. Please see the beautiful picture and blurb about the history of the Christensen House and the approval of the first owner's grandchild. Love to social justice makers and all works of mercy.
Last week the Las Vegas Catholic Worker held a memorial service for Kenny, who attended hospitality day and was a kind friend for many years. A stone was installed in the memorial garden honoring him, and a delicious lunch was cooked by volunteers, to nourish the grievers.
Love to the community and to the soul of Kenny and his family. He is loved and deeply missed.
Last night a few Las Vegas Catholic Workers participated in an online fundraiser for Guadalupe House, the Tacoma Catholic Worker up in Washington state. We enjoyed drinking tea, basking in candle light, and learning more about how they do things at the Tacoma Catholic Worker, including how pandemic has affected their work.
We loved seeing their beautiful gardens. Laura-Marie Taylor said oo and ah about the bees. Julia Occhiogrosso and Gary and Ming knew some of the people who spoke. It was a fun fundraiser, with prayer and funny stories, and a joy to connect. Love to all who do works of mercy, receive works of mercy, and to sunflowers.
Sunrise, preparing food for the hungry to enjoy on the soup line, this beautiful spring. Love to all the peace makers, meal assemblers, lovers of Mother Earth, and believers in new life and new chances. Love to those sleeping on the streets and in warm homes. Happy Easter from the Las Vegas Catholic Worker.
Happy birthday to Las Vegas Catholic Worker Richard Ming Lai! We celebrate you and your service to the people of Las Vegas and the world. You are a shining light, and it's a joy to share community with you. Thank you for making good choices--thank you to the mother who birthed you and the family that originated you. Thank you to Laura-Marie Taylor for happily partnering with you. Peace to the peaceful courtyard. To life!
Ray bagging cookies
Ray and Diane McCollum made 360 cookies and bagged them for our morning food line on Friday, March 26. Ray and Diane have also been taping drink flavor packets to each water bottle donated by the Knights of Columbus from St. Anthony of Padua. Ray has been coming to help assemble and serve our “ToGo” meals on Fridays, and we use his truck to transport the meals.
