Due to unforeseen circumstances in his life, a young pup who we named Captain Bubba came to us in 2016. A gentler, sillier, and sweeter puppy we have not seen. He was adopted by a loving family and renamed Loui. He then spent many years receiving the love and care that every dog deserves. He was stubborn and playful and loyal to his core. He was treated for a thyroid issue years ago. A few years back, he developed a seizure disorder and has now earned his wings because the meds no longer were able to calm /control the episodes. His family says, "He was the goodest boy and we miss him," with which we wholeheartedly agree. You were so loved Loui. Every dog deserves a life like yours. Many blessings and comfort to his family. Kisses to your wet nose and belly rubs forever, baby boy.

Restful dreams to adopted alumni Sunday. She earned her wings yesterday at about 14 years of age. Neglected for the first 12 years of her life, she found bliss in the last 2. We've never met a happier girl. Everyone was a friend. People, please get your dogs fixed. Her mammary cancer was completely preventable and her loving mom would have loved more time with her. 2 years went by so quickly.

Until we meet again, Sunday.

Famous author E.B. White (He wrote Charlotte's Web and other great stories) once shared his thoughts on dachshunds. Enjoy!

"Being the owner of dachshunds, to me a book on dog discipline becomes a volume of inspired humor. Every sentence is a riot. Some day, if I ever get a chance, I shall write a book, or warning, on the character and temperament of the dachshund and why he can't be trained and shouldn't be. I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a dachshund to heed my slightest command. When I address Fred I never have to raise either my voice or my hopes. He even disobeys me when I instruct him in something he wants to do."

Nearly 30 dachshunds found living in deplorable conditions in North Fayette Township 07/19/2023

Pittsburgh news highlighted this case today. Thankfully, most of the dachshunds survived their ordeal.

"They were suffering from malnourishment, dental disease, matted fur, overgrown nails and eye infections, humane investigators said. The dogs are now being cared for at HARP's East Side shelter."

Nearly 30 dachshunds found living in deplorable conditions in North Fayette Township North Fayette police and humane investigators served a search warrant at the North Fayette home on Monday.

šŸ›Žā°ļøšŸšØALERT!!

We're calling upon the entire On My Way Home Rescue community to help bring Doc home. Missing in Las Vegas since May 29th, Doc could be anywhere by now, including out of state. There have been numerous sightings but nothing has led to his return so far. He may have even been picked up by someone who meant well and doesn't realize that he is a most beloved family member and emotional support animal. Will you please help? You can share, keep an eye out, print his flyer, and contact news agencies. The more the word is spread, the greater the odds of Doc returning home safely. Please help us for Doc's sake. Thank you.

Message from Doc's family:

"Please HELP! My sweet grandboy somehow got out from my daughterā€™s patio... at the 2900 LUX apartments. Heā€™s a miniature dachshund ā€œwiener dogā€, sable in color (mixed brown/tan/black), long haired, brown eyes, approximately 9-10 lbs. Answers to Doc. Heā€™s her service dog and I donā€™t know what sheā€™ll do without him. Please reach out if you have him or see him.šŸ™šŸ»šŸ’”šŸ˜"

Congratulations to Ahonui on his adoption! This gentle dinosaur is living his best life already in his new kingdom. It isn't easy finding a home for a tortoise over 100 pounds. Patience is a must with placement, which is ironic because that is what Ahonui means in Hawaiian: patience!

Looking for his family! Louie is certain that someone will want to adopt him and make their family complete. He's about 9 pounds of sweet love. Playful, cuddly, smart, and always wanting to please. Great with other dogs. Mom was a Brussels griffon mix and dad was a chihuahua. Apply to adopt this handsome prince at https://www.onmywayhomerescue.com.

Previously placed, but Louie was returned because his adopted mom wouldn't give him more than a couple of weeks to settle into her unique routine that was a bit confusing.

Millie and Mollie are adopted and living their best lives. These southern belles have been patient - finding a home for a bonded pair of seniors takes longer - but it was worth it! Happy times ahead, sweet, "honeys."

We have a lovely update about Piper. After a long consultation and recommendations from Dan Rana of Canine Advanced Training Services of Las Vegas, Piper has been able to successfully reunite with her family. Behavior isn't always about the dogs. Most of the time, it is us as people who are unknowingly missing signs and not understanding what our animals are communicating. So many of us can benefit from assistance from a qualified animal behavioral trainer. We can't recommend Dan more highly and are so pleased to have this family able to reunite. Happy times ahead for sweet Piper and her whole family!

ADOPTABLE: Ahonui is a 23 year old male Sulcata (African spur thigh) tortoise seeking his forever family.Ā  He is a big boy at over 100 pounds.Ā  He was named Ahonui by his previous family...the name means Patience in Hawaiian because his s*x was unknown for so long while he was a juvenile!Ā  Tortoise experience is required with this challenging species.Ā  As the 3rd largest tortoise in the world and the largest mainland tortoise in the world, the Sulcata is not for everyone.Ā  They need a large yard, proper diet, protection from cold and heat, and safety.Ā  If you have the experience, yard space, and lots of patience then adopting a Sulcata could be for you!Ā  Apply to adopt at https://www.onmywayhomerescue.com and send any questions to [email protected].

NOTE: Please be part of the solution and avoid purchasing Sulcata hatchling tortoises. They WILL grow HUGE. They ARE incredibly DESTRUCTIVE. Please spread awareness. Thank you!

Las Vegas, order the yummiest of cookies and simultaneously help support a wonderful grassroots bunny rescue here in town. Too many bunnies end up dumped at parks around town when their humans no longer want them. This organization does incredible work with the dumped bunnies and their bunnies are super socialized by the time they're adopted into homes. You can really see the expertise and caring that goes into each of these beloved animals. So if you like cookies and want to help bunnies, please show the love and place those orders! šŸ‡šŸ°šŸ‡

Eagle update:

He is just about ready for his neuter, which would get him closer to adoption. In the meantime, we're doing all we can to help our spectrum boy to understand the world better and be able to thrive. He loves to munch on his chewies, watch the birds, follow his foster brother around, and be held. We've never encountered a dog with special needs quite like him and he even has the veterinarians stumped. They do seem to agree that he is always going to be different than other dogs.

History: I'm 7 months old now. My doggie parents should not have, ā€œmarried,ā€ each other & made puppies because they passed down some difficult genes to many of their puppies (theyā€™ve since been fixed, so they wonā€™t be making any more special puppies ever again).Ā Ā The regular puppies in the litter were all sold & thrived with their families.Ā Ā The, ā€œspecial,ā€ puppies like me were neurologically challenged & prone to seizures.Ā Ā 4 out of the 5 special puppies died because they started having these seizures.Ā Ā Iā€™m the only one that has made it & I havenā€™t had any seizures, but I process information differently than other dogs.Ā Ā While I can see & hear just great, my brain sometimes processes the information more slowly while I figure out what Iā€™m hearing.Ā Ā I love to be around other dogs, to explore outside, to go for walks, to be loved and held by humans, to play with toys, & to run like the wind.Ā Ā I just do things differently than other dogs sometimes.Ā

So, you see, not everyone is going to be the best fit for me.Ā Ā Some of my special requirements are a yard because an apartment wonā€™t give me what I need room-wise & routine-wise.Ā Ā While Iā€™m mostly crate trained & potty-trained, my new family will need to understand that my training could take longer & I need a patient mommy or daddy because Iā€™m easily distracted & need you to take me out so I donā€™t forget.Ā Ā I have lots & lots of energy, so my family has to be able to satisfy my athletic needs with lots of walks or hikes or fun in general.Ā Ā More updates to come.

10 1/2 years ago, a beautiful and shy pup named V***n was adopted from our rescue. She was renamed Mouse, which was the perfect name for this sensitive and most loving of girls. On March 2nd, Mouse gained her wings and is now residing in Heaven. Her family contacted us and had these words to say:

"She lived a wonderful lifeā€¦she was very loved and will be so deeply missed." They also mentioned that she was silly and stubborn...sounds like a perfect dachshund description!

What really hit us in the feels was this statement from her family: "She raised two little girlsā€¦it was her best work."

What a blessing. Even though cancer took her away, she was, "...loved by everyone that met her."

Mouse lived a fulfilled and wonderful life. Rest easy, sweet girl.

Joy and glad tidings for Toby, who has found forever love in the arms of 4 humans, a canine sister, some lizards, and his own exotic bird posse as well!

Toby was adopted as a young puppy but was returned to rescue because of a family situation. His mouth was a mess but a dental cleaning and extractions helped him to feel better. We make a lifetime commitment to our animals and we were glad to help him on his path to greater joy. Congratulations, little lion. You're the king of the world!
