✋Say hello to Josh Wikler ‘02! Josh is principal at Bob Miller Middle School. 🐾 He earned his BSED from UNLV College of Education in secondary education, focusing on English Composition in 2002. 🎓
Josh shared that his favorite class was History of Rock ‘n’ Roll, which he had at night. He and his friends would first go to In-and-Out before class so he was fueled for learning! 🍔
When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family traveling. “I have been fortunate to travel to a lot of Latin America with my family. We’ve been to Venezuela, Chile, and spent three straight summers in the Dominican Republic!”
Josh will be joining the COE Alumni Chapter board on January 1, and we thank him for his service!

Please meet doctoral alum Dr. Kristine Jan Cruz Espinoza ‘24! Kristine earned her Ph.D. this past summer in Higher Education. 🎓
Kristine shared that her favorite UNLV moment was her dissertation defense where 100+ people joined in person or virtually to support her. “Certainly, the dissertation, itself, was a mountain, if not THE mountain... but that day will forever be an example of how I do not and did not cross this finish line alone.”
When asked about her motivations and commitment to the field of education, Kristine said, “I admit to ‘falling into’ the study of higher education vis-a-vis my route as a peer academic advisor and New Student Orientation leader as an undergraduate. However, I began moving beyond an individual-level analysis to thinking more broadly about the legacy and lineage of oppression, power, and privilege stratifying higher education (policies, practices, procedures). It is an immense privilege to be afforded this education and the opportunities that came with it.” ❤️

🎓 Meet Rachel De Vera ‘23! Rachel earned her masters in higher education from UNLV College of Education and serves as the recruitment coordinator for College of Engineering. ❤️🩶
Originally from the Bay Area in northern California, Rachel made her way to UNLV due to the alignment of her career goals and the affordability of the school. She shared, “I love how UNLV is a diverse institution and that helped me gain new perspectives from across the world.” 🌎
Rachel is active and enjoys volleyball, weight lifting, dancing, and crossfit. She also likes to write poetry and enjoys all of the events has to offer. She even attended Super Bowl LVIII where she danced on field during Usher’s halftime performance. 💃

✋ Please meet Jennifer Furman-Born from McCaw STEAM Academy where she’s served as principal for the last 12 years. ⚙️ Jennifer earned a masters in educational leadership in 2005 from UNLV College of Education. 🎓
Some of her favorite memories from UNLV stem from the strong relationships she built with colleagues and professors and as a member of her cohort program. 🤝
This mom of three said she enjoys a good pick-up game of pickleball. 🎾

Marissa serves as the Professional Growth Systems Coordinator at Washoe County School District where she has been instrumental in opening teacher pathways in Northern Nevada including the Nevada Forward Apprenticeship Program through UNLV College of Education.

Today’s doctoral graduate spotlight is Dr. Adjoa Mensah. 👋🏽 Adjoa earned a Ph.D. in Teacher Education this past summer and was named a Holmes Scholar for the UNLV chapter of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education program. 🎓
that Adjoa is a singer (who sang at her high school graduation) as well as a skilled baker? “I have studied cake decoration.” 🎵🎂
When asked about her motivations and commitment to the field of education, Adjoa said, “What keeps me motivated is the knowledge that my work directly contributes to improving educational practices. Additionally, my commitment to integrating innovative technologies into education keeps me engaged and excited about the future possibilities of K-12 classrooms.” ❤️
