Diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia just a week after his 4th birthday, Nolan's journey through childhood cancer has been filled with challenges, hope, and resilience. Nolan's parents noticed something was wrong when their energetic boy began losing his appetite, looking pale, and struggling to catch his breath. “As parents, we were shattered when we found out,” Nolan’s parents said.
Nolan underwent multiple rounds of aggressive chemotherapy, but after two rounds, the cancer was still present in his bone marrow. “He required a life-saving bone marrow transplant,” Nolan’s family explained. By a miracle, his baby brother turned out to be a perfect donor match. The family traveled out of state to California, where Nolan received his transplant in May 2022.
Nolan’s parents remember vividly the day they were introduced to Candlelighters. “We remember Jackie coming into our hospital room with a cart full of toys to choose from. She also gave us resources on how they could help us financially,” Nolan’s family recounted. “Candlelighters helped us be able to afford to travel for treatment. They helped us celebrate the holidays in such a special way,” Nolan's parents added.
The first thing Nolan did when he completed his treatment was to pack up and move back home after living in California for almost nine months.

In the summer of 2008, Dominique was diagnosed with cancer and began outpatient chemotherapy immediately. Her initial treatment ended in August of that year, and she was declared in remission. But just as she began to regain a sense of normalcy, the cancer returned in June of 2009.
Despite the physical and emotional toll, Dominique found ways to cope. "Listening to music, doing art, and surrounding myself with friends who understood what I was going through helped a lot," she says. These friends were primarily from the Candlelighters Teen Scene group, who played a significant role in her journey.
Dominique clearly remembers her introduction to Candlelighters. "I was at my oncologist’s office when Jacki York's shining face came in with a blue bag of goodies and supplies to help with my journey," she says. "From that moment, I knew that I would have a support system that understood what I was going through."
When Dominique finally completed her treatment, the first thing she did was celebrate. "We had a big family dinner, and I felt like I could finally breathe again," she shares.

Born in Mexico, Javier was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at just five years old following a series of illnesses. His mother, who had been promoted, had to make an abrupt decision to leave her new role to take Javier to the U.S. for treatment. “It was a struggle coming from a different country, learning a new language and starting school,” Javier described.
He stayed strong throughout it all and at 10, Javier completed his chemotherapy! “Some of my memories are hazy, but I can remember my mom coming into the room in tears and hugging me. I didn’t know what was going on, she just said, ‘You’re going to be okay, mijo.’”
Javier was introduced to Candlelighters’ Teen Scene in 2007, and he says it was the best therapy he could have had. He found comfort in meeting kids who had gone through the same journey as him.

Last week, we launched our Young Adult Advisory Council (CYAAC). This is a dynamic group of 16 young adult survivors, siblings, and bereaved siblings, ages 18 - 26 years old, who have been affected by childhood cancer. The intention of the CYAC is to provide a platform for young voices to be heard, offer insights, and help shape the experience of care, programs and services for adolescents and young adults navigating a pediatric cancer journey in our community.
We look forward to introducing you to our incredible members and sharing all of the great work they will help lead! 💛
Diagnosed at 12 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Alyssa’s journey began with symptoms that resembled a stubborn cold. Despite the shock, she fought through over two years of chemotherapy, which took a toll on her physically and emotionally.
Alyssa’s introduction to Candlelighters came through Candlelighters’ Teen Scene program. She says, “Candlelighters helped create such positive memories for me. Instead of my memories being tainted by the cancer that plagued my life, they are full of fun memories of me just being a kid with my amazing new friends and family.”
Upon completing treatment, her church raised money to send her family to Disneyland!
Now 23, Alyssa’s advice for kids going through the same thing she did is to lean on the people you love because they’re your biggest support system, and attend every Candlelighters event you can.

Mark pours his heart into this race, raising funds for kids and their families battling cancer while honoring his father, Thomas, whose memory continues to inspire the 5K

Ulises was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 15 years old, an incredibly daunting and life-altering condition. “The tumor was causing liquid to leak and coagulate in my forehead, which required a 32-stitch surgery,” Ulises explained. His journey wasn’t easy. After a nine-hour surgery, Ulises spent one week in a coma. Doctors told his mother he would be paralyzed, but Ulises defied the odds. “But I am not paralyzed!” he exclaims. “I can’t drive or go to the strip, and I can’t stand loud noises, but I’m alive.” Despite many hardships, Ulises and his family found strength in each other.
Ulises was introduced to Candlelighters during his first chemo session, where he was invited to various Candlelighters events. Candlelighters had a profound impact on his journey. “Counseling helps with the PTSD that comes with treatment. They’ve helped us in so many ways, like providing financial assistance and giving us a Walmart gift card for groceries when we were struggling,” he said.
After completing his treatment, Ulises had one thing on his mind: food! Once his port was removed, he and his family celebrated by indulging in all his favorite foods. They also took him to a Homeshake concert, marking the end of this challenging chapter.
Looking back, Ulises has advice for others facing similar battles. “Just keep staying strong and stay positive, even during the roughest patches. You will get through it if you keep looking on the bright side. I love finding humor in my situation—I called myself Mr. Clean when I didn’t have hair,” he chuckled. “See a therapist, communicate with your family, and don’t suffer alone. It’s so much harder if you’re just fighting on your own.”
