On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston Texas to enforce the emancipation proclamation and declare that all enslaved people are now free.
Though the emancipation proclamation had been issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, the proclamation did not have an immediate effect for most enslaved people across the south.
June 19th has become shortened to Juneteenth and honors the end to slavery in the United States. It is considered the longest running African American holiday and, on this day, we celebrate freedom for all Americans.

Meklit Aga recently had the opportunity to present her poster titled "Student Belonging: When and How it Impacts Academic Performance" at the Governor's Mansion and at the Midwest Psychological Association Conference. Conducted with the mentorship of Dr. Chelsea Witt in the Psychology Department, this study aimed to observe personal motivational factors, cognitive & behavioral processes, and learning outcomes in the Psychology Department. One of the findings that brought up discussion among the attendees was how men's belonging was lower than women's belonging in their study.
"We also discussed the importance of university belonging. As we have found that students who felt like they belong more at the university level were more engaged and active in the courses Introductory to Psychology, Advanced Social Psychology, and Psychology of Diversity."
