Our Story
Mission Statement: Helping the helpers: The Center on Children, Families, and the Law provides an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to improve systems and outcomes for children and families.
For 32 years, CCFL has been providing training and instruction to professionals in Nebraska and beyond. We “help the helpers” by educating professionals who work with vulnerable families and individuals. CCFL uses the knowledge of child and family issues we gain through our research in ways that make it easier to educate policymakers and professionals who serve vulnerable populations. CCFL’s work has served as the primary basis for new local, state, and national legislation and has been cited in court rulings, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
CCFL is a grant- and contract-funded center within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Established in 1987, CCFL initially partnered with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to provide research-based curriculum development and deliver innovative and state-of-the-art training to the Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Protection and Safety workforce. That partnership continues today, but CCFL’s extraordinary history of advocacy, research, and instruction has grown exponentially in both scope and reach from that initial focus.
In a typical year, we deliver training to more than 3,000 people, provide approximately 15,000 resources online and in print, and spend approximately 7,000 hours on curriculum development.
