JEI Faculty/Alumni Beats Resident/Staff in Annual Softball Game
Saturday 6/10/23
The thunderstorm at 430 AM Saturday caused me some temporary worry as I wondered if the Annual Softball game would be played later that morning. But I was reassured by the Arkansas phrase that if you don’t like the weather, just wait 15 minutes, it will change. By Gametime 9 am, the weather was excellent, and the game would not be cancelled! It has never been cancelled in my 18 years here in the Natural state.
The Faculty/Alumni team was enhanced this year by the Neuro-op gang of Dr. Joe Fong (from Memphis), Todd Hull (and Hailey), and Hannah Monroe. Hannah’s husband Brandon played for the Resident/Staff Team. I was second-guessing that decision when Brandon speared Hannah’s Line drive hit and doubled up Dr. Fong at first base. The Faculty Team scored 0 in the first inning, a big goose egg.
The Resident/Staff Team took the lead 2-0 at the bottom of the first inning with awesome hitting by Vincent (Front Desk) and his son Micah, as well as Dr. Pedro Tetelbom, a newcomer to the sport of softball! Pedro also ran down and caught several flyballs in centerfield during the game, to the chants of the crowd, “MVP!, MVP!”
The Faculty/Alumni Team then fired up all engines and scored 7 straight runs in the next 3 innings while keeping the Resident/Staff team scoreless. Timely hits by Joe, Hannah, and Riley Sanders sure helped. Lefty Todd Hull played super at first base and consistently hit the ball to bring in runs. Hannah Monroe, Dr. Joe Fong, and Hailey Hull ran down all balls in the outfield which kept runners from scoring. Honorary Team Captain Dr. Chris Westfall managed the team and even recruited a young lad from the crowd named Bennett who turned out to be sure-handed at second base. The score was 7-2 after 4 innings.
The Resident/Staff Team gave 110% effort to try to come back. This included impressive headfirst slides at second base by Kimberly (Phone center) and Dr. Sam K (PGY-1). Dr. Tony Chacko pitcher had an incredible catch of a line drive by Dr. Bora. But it was to no avail, as Dr. Puran Bora got stronger as the game progressed, pitching a complete game for the Faculty. The teams would trade runs back and forth in the 5th and 6th innings. The game finally ended with a nice force play by 3rd baseman Riley of the Atlanta Braves (Dr. Riley Sanders). Final score was 11-5 in favor of the Faculty/Alumni. And a great time was had by all.

Residency Program
The Ophthalmology Residency Program provides a broad educational experience in all aspects of ophthalmology. Residents work and perform research beside experienced comprehensive and subspecialist ophthalmologists. Modern, fully-equipped exam lanes and operating suites are provided at principal rotation sites which include the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital.
The three-year program prepares graduates for the challenge and complexity of future practices in ophthalmology through training in the latest scientific and technological advances. Our comprehensive curriculum allows residents to benefit from a very broad clinical and surgical experience. They develop valuable expertise in different subspecialty areas during their three years of study.
Being the only Ophthalmology Training Program in Arkansas, our residents have excellent volume, and a well-balanced clinical and surgical load of patients. Our extensive faculty of subspecialist ophthalmologists make us the region’s largest ophthalmologic specialty group. We have an active community-based faculty, allowing residents to develop close working relationships with both generalists and specialists.
To apply, a completed application must be processed through the Central Application Service (CAS) and submitted along with your dean’s letter [after September 1.] With the exception of the dean’s letter, we will not accept any material after Sept. 1. For more information, please e-mail [email protected] or you may e-mail the Program Director, Ahmed Sallam, M.D., Associate Program Director, Jeffrey Yee, M.D., or the Resident Coordinator, Shelli Madison B.A.,
