🪴 Meet Guadalupe Michell Morales Garfias, a Human Development major, who is currently in her senior year at CSULB. She also is our department’s social media manager for LinkedIn.
🧚♀️ Her hobbies include hiking, working out, and art related activities.
🌟 Aspirations after graduating: Michell would like to take a year off from school to travel. After, Michell plans to continue her education and complete a masters program in sociology.
🫂 Advice to current college students: “Before declaring a major. it’s important to explore your own personal interests and hobbies. Following your passions will make your coursework easier and enjoyable.”

🍀 As a substance abuse counselor, you'll play a pivotal role in helping individuals overcome addiction and achieve recovery. This rewarding HDEV career path is ideal for those passionate about making a difference in people's lives.
➡️ Here are some typical job duties for substance abuse counselors:
Conduct assessments to determine the level and type of addiction.
Develop personalized treatment plans and goals for clients
Provide counseling and support to help clients navigate recovery.
Collaborate with healthcare professionals and support networks to ensure comprehensive care.
🌟 Many substance abuse counselor positions offer rewarding experiences, opportunities for professional growth, and the chance to positively impact communities!
🪴 Meet Achilles Roland Peralta, a Human Development major currently in his last year of undergraduate studies at CSULB. He is part of the Public Relations team for the Human Development Department.
👨🎨 His hobbies include drawing and photography. “I’m actually really bad at drawing,” Achillies says, “but I know it’s just another skill that anyone can get through consistent practice and effort.”
🌟 Aspirations after graduating: “I plan to enroll into a POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certified academy around the end of this year. That should take about 5-6 months to complete so after that, I will start looking for a full-time officer position starting next summer. Ideally, I would like to be employed for the Orange County Police Department.”
🫂 Achilles’ advice to current, undeclared, and incoming students interested in Human Development: “in terms of careers and postgraduate study, you will find that having a degree in HDEV will open many doors, some of which are similar to psychology, nursing, and sociology majors (just to name a few).”
🌟 By delving into our own emotions, thoughts, and experiences, we cultivate a deeper understanding of human nature, fostering meaningful connections and enhancing our relationship with others.

🪴 An early speech-language pathologist works children, evaluating and treating speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders. This can be a great HDEV career path for people who enjoy direct patient care and have an interest in speech language pathology.
➡️ Here are a few typical job duties for speech pathologist:
Meet with clients and identify individual goals to set treatment plans.
Provide training to family and caregivers.
Provide therapy and intervention to enhance communication skills.
🌟 Many early speech-language pathologist jobs allow for flexible schedules and have high job security in the workforce!
📚 Approaches to Childhood (DE)
📝 Discover childhood from conception to early adolescence, learning how children develop and grow across different biological, psychological AND sociocultural contexts.
➡️ Prerequisites: GE Foundation Requirements: ANTH 120 or HDEV 180 or PSY 100 or SOC 100 with a “C” or better.
🪴 An early interventionist is a behavioral specialist who works with children in the early stages of development. This can be a great HDEV career path for people who enjoy interacting with children and have an interest in behavioral therapy.
➡️ Here are a few typical job duties for an early interventionist:
-Meeting with children who have special needs to develop therapy and treatment plans
-Helping children set goals for early development and work toward them
-Tracking their students' development over time to identify effective strategies and coping mechanisms
🌟 Many early interventionists work for a particular school district, but they can also work for specific private schools or programs that offer support to very young children with special needs.
📚 Explore the dynamic of the Social Learning Theory! This theory proposes that children learn by observing the behavior of others and the consequences that follow and that this learning can shape their own behavior.
🧠 Being conscious of our behavior can help us ensure we are more intentional about our behavior and personal growth.
