Thanks to all the students, faculty and staff who showed up to No One Left Behind!
We got to talk openly and honestly about diversity, equity and inclusion at the College of Engineering, celebrate our differences and hear suggestions to help each other achieve the goals of equity, diversity and racial justice.
We had a bulletin board up for to students to share their thoughts and here are some of the things that were mentioned:
1. Awesome event! More DEI events, please, at least one per semester.
2. We come from many backgrounds. We need to honor our differences.
3. We need more different representatives from different cultures doing outreach.
4. Inequality is prominent, everyone is deserving of support.
“I am grateful to DeeDee Green for her work in leading the Dean's Commission on Equity, Diversity, and Racial Justice, and to all the faculty, staff, and students who serve on the commission,” said Dean Rhee. “No One Left Behind is a great example of the impactful work that the commission will continue to do for the college.”
The College of Engineering is so thankful Jill C. Anderson agreed to join us at the 2023 Women in Engineering Conference as our morning keynote speaker!
Anderson, Executive Vice President of Operations at Southern California Edison, is one of over 60 women who volunteered, and is a great example of what makes this a special opportunity for our students.
“I want to encourage these engineers of tomorrow to focus on three important concepts I’ve learned: 1) Engineers need to go beyond just being smart, 2) the importance of being a role model, and 3) having the courage to not only dream big, but expand ourselves beyond the limits of what we can dream about,” said Anderson.

Our very own Lisa M. Star, associate professor and department chair for the Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering Management Department, was interviewed by the Geo-Institute of ASCE!
“A typical day for me is like a random event generator. That’s how I feel about students and faculty for that matter” she joked. “It’s trying to do the stuff that makes everyone else’s life possible. The best part of what I do—unquestionably though—is work with my student groups, my ASCE competition teams, that’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.”
