Congratulations to Alma Lopez, our January 🌟Shining Star!
"Alma's exceptional qualities and commitment to her patients and colleagues have truly made her a deserving winner of this award. She provides assistance to everyone, both preoperative and postoperative patients. Alma reliably helps patients secure their transportation, actively listens, addresses their concerns, and prioritizes their well-being throughout their time in the hospital. Her dedication to excellence and positive influence on both the team and patients embody the spirit of the Shining Star Award."
Alma shown through the brightest one day when she noticed the signs of a stroke for a patient who had to undergo surgery. Her empathetic mindset helped Alma recognize the warnings between the week timeframe she had last seen the patient. She swiftly alerted the team to initiate a Code Stroke.
"She consistently fulfills her duties diligently, ensuring the well-being and satisfaction of both healthcare professionals and the patients she serves. Alma is a supportive team member, adaptable professional, patient advocate, and responsible contributor which have left a lasting impact on our team at A5C."

They witnessed firsthand our commitment to providing world-class, patient-centered care and innovative solutions to meet the needs of our community.
Beyond the surface, these visits help highlight the vital partnerships between local and federal leaders that drive our mission of delivering exceptional care and keeping the community healthy. We are grateful for their ongoing support and look forward to continued collaboration.💙

Announcing our March WE CARE Awards winners! What is WE CARE? This is the hospital's way of recognizing the unsung heroes who go above and beyond in caring for others. These monthly awards are designed to honor empathy, compassion, and the WE CARE philosophy that defines our commitment to excellence.
Bennie Green: It's one thing to provide quality care, but it's exceptional to connect and build rapport with patients. Bennie's compassion is a defining example of what WE CARE stands for. Even the most challenging patients in the Psych ED become calm mannered with the level of empathy Bennie puts forth.
Nick Jordan: He has been a commendable member of our Chaplains team! Nick has a heart of gold, and will lend an open ear to those who are in need. Whichever the situation, he'll pause whatever he’s doing to give you his full attention. His kindness, care, and support continue to make a positive impact amongst our community.
Dr. Spencer Liebman: Dr. Liebman's dedication knows no bounds as he ensures our team is well-equipped in getting patients the treatment they need. Patients are not part of the DHS network? No problem, Dr. Liebman rallies his team to link the patients to their primary care team, shelter, or treatment center. The patient always comes first!
Congratulations to Ramon Gonzalez, our February DAISY Honoree! 🌼💚💙
"Ramon is one of the youngest nurses on the 7B team, but a powerhouse. He is loved, admired, and respected by all. I have watched him grow into a great caregiver, coworker, and team player. He has a way about him especially when taking care of our female elderly patients. With such reverence, tenderness, and high regard, one would think he is caring for his own mother or family member. I often hear the Supervisor say, 'He’s going to be a great girl dad.' He’s always willing to step up to the plate, no matter the task. There is never a “no” or “I can’t” in his vocabulary. Whatever the circumstances, he is there to rescue us. He’s always present, always able, and always willing to go the extra mile not only for patients, but for his coworkers. In addition to being a great person, he is an outstanding, off-the-chart cook. He’s always gracing us with his mean Choco flan and 'Want to Slap Your Mama' Ceviche!"
Round and round the Traveling "A" goes, where it stops...actually we do know. This time the "A" visits 8A, 8B, 8C, and 8D, our Med Surg, Pediatrics, and PICU units!
The Future Healthcare Leaders Program has concluded! During the summer, 13 exceptional students were selected to take part in a comprehensive educational experience that offers a unique glimpse into the healthcare field. Students engaged in workshops, clinic rotations, and tours led by our top professionals in nursing, pharmacy, and primary care. 💙 Special thanks to Gaby Hernandez Gonzalez and Dr. Manuel Campa for their leadership and another successful program!

We love it! 💙 Congratulations!

🚚 It's finally Food Truck Friday and the trucks have rolled in with the most mouthwatering lunch options! Come grab a bite and enjoy some delicious eats. Don't miss out on this chance to indulge in some seriously tasty treats! 🍔🌮
Our Infusion Center did something so amazing and heartwarming! They, along with the Patient Experience and Facilities team, crafted a "Healing 🔔Bell" with a strong message for patients to ring once they complete their treatment and go into remission.
"I fought. I endured.
I ring the bell in celebration."
"Yo luche. Yo soporte.
Yo toco la campana en celebración."
Thank you to all those involved who worked hard to give patients a moment to memorialize their achievement.💙
The Traveling "A" has started to make its appearance around each unit! Our Leapfrog "A" Grade is due in part of all the excellent and collaborative efforts from each team that delivers 🌎world-class care to all. To celebrate this achievement, each team will be visited by the Traveling A and also receive a sweet cookie🍪
In this pic, shoutout to: 7B, 7C, 7D, 7G
Congratulations to Katherine Makaroff on graduating and becoming one of our newest Registered Nurses! When asked about her favorite part of being an RN, she said, "I get to care for many different patients in various situations, and witness their healing progress here. It brings me joy to see them recover and return home healthy." Your passion for nursing shines through in everything you do. 💙

Congratulations to Maria Herrera, our December 2023 🌟Shining Star!
"Our family and I are so thankful for Maria. She is so caring and is truly the person you would want to have next to you during difficult times. Maria made my dad so comfortable and feel like he was taken care of. Every day, you are touching lives and making a difference with your quality care. This hospital is truly blessed to have you. Thank you, Maria, from the bottom of our hearts."
"I worked with Maria today and am, once again, blown away by how big her heart is. She cares deeply for her patients and always helps them in any way she can. She is a rockstar that we always love to see on our unit, and I know she deserves this award."

History
Founded in 1878, Los Angeles County + University of Southern California (LAC+USC) Medical center is one of the nation’s largest academic medical training institutions. For more than a century, the medical center has enjoyed a successful partnership with the University of Southern California (USC) School of Medicine, serving the Southern California Region.
The Los Angeles County General Hospital and the University of Southern California Medical School were first affiliated in 1885, five years after USC was founded. It was originally established as a 100-bed hospital with 47 patients and has trained thousands of physicians, nurses, and other health professionals.
The Medical Centers history began as families from the East Coast and Midwest came to Southern California, and the population surged. New communities of immigrantsformed outside the city limits of Los Angeles and high rates of infant mortality and infectious disease were reported in the media. The growing rates of infectious diseases contributed to Los Angeles County’s decision to build a new facility in the 1920s. The Los Angeles County General Hospital opened in December 1933. Its size was 1 million square feet, and its cost was $12 million. Its art-deco construction earned it the nickname the Great Stone Mother and had 1359 licensed beds. Infectious diseasesinfluenced the design of the new facility, with its verticalstacks of wards separated by stairwells and elevators to reduce the flow of patients, visitors, and staff, and the spread of infectious agents. As infectious diseases subsided, the hospital was converted to provide general acute care and specialty care.
In 1942, the capacity of the county hospital was expanded to nearly 3800 beds to accommodate injured military personnel returning from World War II. Postwar population growth in Los Angeles County and suburbanization had a profound impact on Los Angeles and its health care system. These communities were thriving, with industries, jobs, and neighborhoods with single-family dwellings. During the postwar population surge of the 1950s, industries, jobs, and money followed the mostly White families to the growing suburban communities. The 2051 MARENGO STREET, LOS ANGELES, CA 90033 OFFICE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS previously prospering central and east Los Angeles communities became home to a growing number of low-income families who were predominantly black and latino. By the 1960s, the hospital had become a medical complex that included the General Hospital, the Pediatric Pavilion, the Psychiatric Hospital, and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. It was renamed the Los Angeles County University of Southern California Medical Center in 1978.
