MORRISON JEEP TRAIL (UPDATE)

A couple of weeks ago, I spoke with the District Ranger for the Morrison Jeep Trail area of the Shoshone National Forest, and then yesterday, I spoke with one of the forest's engineers. Here is what I learned:

The plan to rebuild the lower road and clear the switchbacks is still ongoing. While there was hope last year that work would be started and/or completed this year, that is not happening. They tell me that next year is also a pipe dream. The engineer said "maybe" they could get a late summer start on the project, but that likely still means at least two more years of closure.

The Ranger and the engineer both tell me that the forest is short-staffed and does not currently have the resources (manpower) for this project. This is undoubtedly a substantial project, and repairs continue to get more complicated every year the switchbacks are not maintained.

Yes, the FEMA funding is there for now. However, I have concerns. I have emailed Casey, the Ranger, to see if there is a use it or lose it type "done by" date for the FEMA grants for this project. Should the FEMA funding disappear, I think that could be a death knell for this trail. But that is conjecture. I will update things if/when I get an answer.

No good news, but now you know.

Heads up!

New weight restrictions for SR 165 Carbon River/Fairfax Bridge | WSDOT SR 165 Carbon River Bridge inspections have resulted in state bridge engineers lowering the weight restriction on the bridge to 8 tons. This means vehicles over 16,000 pounds or 8 tons are not allowed to cross the 103-year-old bridge.
