Welcome to the Official Edmonds Education Association instagram! I’m so thrilled to introduce myself, Lauren, as the new social media manager for the EEA. Our goal for social media is to connect educators and our community with one another, help you get the information you need, and be a digital space to share a part of our collective voice! A little bit about me? I’m actually not a teacher in the district but I am a member of this strong union as a School Nurse. I have been working in the district for 3 years and have had the joy of working with middle school families all 3 years. My favorite thing that the union has bargained for was to include Education Staff Associates like nurses, psychologists, counselors, speech language pathologists and occupational therapists as a part of the union members. We are better all together and it takes a team to make school the best place it can be. Say hi! Feel free to DM with any questions, ideas or concerns and give us a FOLLOW on Instagram! ♥️

It felt like we would never make it, but we always do. Have a joyful and relaxing summer!
Just as students do better when they have a supportive relationship with a teacher, the same holds true for teachers and administrators. Our schools that are thriving despite challenges have administrators who care about the well-being of their staff and know how to nurture and utilize their strengths. PD, "tough choices." and competition have never made significant steps towards excellence.

Comment: What hangs in the balance on levy election nights | HeraldNet.com After 12 years in classrooms, a teacher reflects on what matters to student engagement and achievement.
A group of parents in the Blaine School District (Whatcom County) were researching why they have had to make massive cuts to their schools in the past two years and came across the funding letter signed by multiple districts this winter. They reached out to us because they have started organizing, and one step is a school funding petition to the House and Senate Education Committees. Amplifying all voices is a good thing--please sign and share, if you are so inclined!

56.5. You may hear that the district is "only" RIFing 24 people (some partial, some full) representing 13.2 FTE. That's not transparent. They are eliminating 56.5 FTE of teaching positions next year. Those are people in classrooms in front of kids, so these losses directly impact class sizes. That 56.5 FTE was reduced to 13.2 through retirements, resignations, and leaves that are not being replaced. To make matters worse, the bulk of these reductions fall on secondary schools because the district chooses not to staff honestly--they give secondary schools staffing based on kids taking 5 classes instead of 6. The Board has made some hard decisions already, but I think they need to make a few more. Do we really need 3 levels of a new curriculum? Do we really need to continue to prioritize some expensive specialty programs that drain staffing away from other places? Do we really need all these meetings when teachers will be trying to meet the needs of so many more kids? If we had ample money, it would be fine...but we don't. These are only the instructional cuts--there are dozens more impacting SINCS, paras, custodians, office personnel, grounds crew, and administrators. Our system is at the breaking point. We need our leaders to make good fiscal decisions so we can limp through this next year while our leaders, our educators, and our community band together to demand change at the State level. This November we have an election and in January we have a budget Legislative session. Get ready--there is work to do.
