Jewish Boy Scouts save life with CPR on flight home from New Mexico 07/23/2024

*** FSR CAMP STAFF MEMBER HELPS SAVE LIFE ON CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT ***

The National Eagle Scout & Alumni Associations of the Monmouth Council, BSA is honored to recognize Forestburg Scout Reservation Aquatics Staff Member Moshe Grimaldi and members and advisors in his fellow Philmont Contingent who collectively successfully administered CPR to a stricken passenger on their return flight from New Mexico to New York on July 11, 2024.

Life Scout Grimaldi was trained in Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider, in part, by National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award Recipients Will Vaughan and Paul Usechak. Vaughan and Usechak are both active members of Monmouth Council's Health & Safety Committee and NESA Chapter.

"We are exceptionally proud of these guys who, along with a nurse practitioner performing ACLS, successfully resuscitated a passenger in cardiac arrest on their flight back from Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico," said Vaughan.

Brian Valentino, Chairman of the National Eagle Scout & Alumni Associations of the Monmouth Council, added, "Moshe and his friends and advisors are among our most distinguished alumni. As scouts we all promise, on our honor, to help other people at all times and sometimes that means using our skills, talents, training, leadership and example to save another person's life. Their bravery, helpfulness, and scout spirit were used to their best possible use and their actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Scouting movement."

This week we began another year of our statewide Environmental Professional Development Academy. The five weeks that I am the lead instructor are mostly about administration and leadership. One of the biggest takeaways I have gleaned in years as a fire service and environmental sector instructor is that MOST people have a hard time transitioning from follower to leader. Elections, appointments, promotions, and good will DO NOT automatically come with the knowledge, skills, abilities, characteristics, attitudes and grit necessary to LEAD. Leadership requires a certain mindset and that mindset can be taught and it can be learned but we ALL must MODEL that mindset in our leadership actions. Those who climb up the leadership ladder behind us will have a much easier time doing so when they know what LEADERSHIP looks, sounds, and feels like from great leaders who personify those BEST behaviors.

Note: Thank you to Ryan Szimanski, Curator of the Battleship New Jersey, for sharing a page from BB-62's Emergency Plan that inspired this post. P.S. If you aren't already following Ryan and the NEW JERSEY on social media, you are missing some of the best content on the internet.

For those of you with wistful thoughts of Forestburg, help us celebrate the newest members of Scouts BSA who earned their Arrow of Light Rank at Forestburg Scout Reservation this weekend. Despite the rain, they hiked to Darlington Falls, had a long conversation with Ranger George Kaiser, practiced some shooting sports, toured the Reservation, and held their promotion ceremony in the Housman Memorial Lodge, lit with luminaries featuring memories of their Cub Scouting years in Ocean Township Pack 143.
