Happy Thanksgiving from the Thompson TFCO Treatment Foster Care Team!🍂🦃🥧

One of our TFCO teens has been working with her team so she can learn more about baking. Baking and cooking can be a great activities for self care and can be used as a coping skill. All recipes have some form of repetition to them. Kneading, mixing, measuring, shaping, and decorating all have a rhythm involved and can be a healthy way to reduce stress.

This also got me thinking about some new recipes I would like to try for Thanksgiving...

For all of those pumpkin and cheesecake fans out there, here is a recipe!

Happy Halloween from ! Our youth have been enjoying many fun activities so far this Fall season! 👻🎃

Pictured here are two “Worry Monsters” created by a youth who is learning about how to handle symptoms of anxiety with appropriate coping skills with their individual therapist. Every eyeball represents a worry that the youth is working through.

Another fun skills coach activity with TFCO!

This kiddo was not interested in painting a pumpkin, but the Skills Coach did a great job supporting the youth and they were able to practice the skills of "going with the flow" and "following the plan".

TFCO Skills Coaches use a variety of therapeutic techniques to support and coach our youth so they can practice and develop skills.

Would you be brave enough to pet a starfish? We had another great Skills Coach session exploring SEA LIFE Aquarium! Our youth had a blast exploring the different exhibits and trying new things during this outing.

Skills Coach sessions are used in TFCO to practice skills that are being shaped in the foster home while in public. Skills coaches get creative to find new, fun experiences every week!

Learn more about the TFCO program by visiting our website, linked on this page.

Check out this scene from a fun Skills Coach session with one of our TFCO youth. This youth travelled to Starbucks with their Skills Coach to complete a virtual “Escape Room” challenge. The youth was able to identify skills used including teamwork, patience, problem-solving and communication! They loved showing off their math skills to complete the final puzzle in order to “break out!”

In addition to weekly therapy sessions with an individual therapist, each week our TFCO youth spend time with their skills coach to practice targeted skills and pro-social behavior in public.

Show this youth some encouragement for completing their task and working hard while having fun in the community by ”liking” this post!

Prosocial skills are also known as “friendship skills,” because they help us get along with one another. Research demonstrates that children who show greater prosocial skills are more likely to have positive social interactions as well as a more positive view of themselves. They are also less likely to engage in aggressive behaviors. Researchers have also found that these behaviors tend to be fairly stable over time. In other words, once a child has learned and practiced prosocial skills, they should be able to use them successfully over a lifetime.

Modeled after 911, the new three-digit 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is designed to be a memorable and quick number that connects people who are suicidal or in any other mental health crisis to a trained mental health professional.

The primary goal of the new number is to make it easier for people to call for help.

Mental health advocates hope that 988 will become a widely known, safer and more effective alternative to calling 911.

People who call or text the number will be connected to a trained counselor at a crisis center closest to them. If a local crisis center is too busy to respond right away, the call gets routed to one of 16 backup centers around the country.

transcript: "to make a difference in someone's life, you don't have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful or perfect. You just have to care."

We always hope we are doing a good job letting people know, being a foster parent is more about caring than anything else. It was recently asked in an online forum, "Would you consider me as a foster parent if it is just me?" Single or partnered, we want you!

Our latest co-hort of TFCO parents finishes up training this week, and we've been having lots of valuable conversations. The pro-social learning model is a basis for the training we do, and the class suggested we share this chart to help the community better understand why we do things this way. What do you think?

Excited to announce we'll be attending more and more community events this year! August 13th & 14th you'll find the big purple booth at Black Mountain's Sourwood Festival!

"There are many great things about TFCO but, for me, the best part was how it simplified my role in the complex lives of these young children. I was supported by TFCO to focus on loving and supporting the kids in my care, advocate for them, and, at the same time, leave the clinical work to the clinicians. In this way, TFCO allowed me to be the parent to these children which, in turn, allowed them the space they needed to heal. - Mary Laws Coordinator of Foster Parent Recruitment and Licensing for Oregon Community Programs, Contract Consultant for TFCO, and 25 year veteran foster parent"

Graphic: " There is a darkness with foster parents that we rarely verbalize. The reason why we don't talk about it is because to verbalize it, means to hear from others 'well you should just stop fostering' or 'You are too stressed out. You need to focus on yourself and your own kids.'

To verbalize the darkness is to invite people to discourage you from doing this thing you know you are meant to do even though it is hard."
