School Funding Update / Public Meeting PUBLIC MEETING: Potential Referendum / School Funding UpdateDave Koester facilitator

The Medford Schools Home Resource Program will be promoting our 2024-25 School Supply Drive from August 5th through August 16th. We are collecting school supplies for students of all grades. Those willing to donate school supplies can drop them off at Medford Area Elementary School where we will collect and then distribute them to families in need. Thank you to our local individuals, businesses, and organizations who help in this area.

Dear Medford Community,

For many years, the Medford School Board has been discussing updating and remodeling our school buildings. In Wisconsin, school districts operate under a funding system that doesn't allow for budgeting and saving specifically for renovations and large maintenance projects. Adding new programs equals the need for extra space. However, the process of funding renovations and improvements isn't as straightforward as one might think.

When it comes time to address necessary upgrades to our facilities, such as repairing aging infrastructure, districts often find themselves seeking additional funding through referendums. These referendums ask the community to consider increasing their taxes temporarily to support these much-needed improvements.

Fortunately, the state shares in your referendum costs. The state will provide up to $0.75 per dollar spent in aid payments to the Medford district. This benefits your community by allowing the state to share in your cost of these improvements, an option that not all Wisconsin school districts receive.

We understand that asking for a tax increase is never an easy decision, which is why we value your input and perspective. Your feedback is crucial in helping us understand what renovations and improvements you, the community/taxpayer, would be willing to support through a referendum.
