It's The Marine Residence for our Friday Feature for your feed!

The present-day Colonial Revival-style U.S. Marine Hospital Building was constructed in 1934-1936, followed by its Steam Laundry in Modernist style in 1939.

In order to make room for the large three-story, three-wing hospital building, both the Executive Building, (now part of next door Metal Museum), and the Nurses Quarters were shifted about 100 feet out of its way to the northwest and northeast.

The western end of the hospital grounds was sold to the City of Memphis shortly after the facility closed in 1960, and was later leased to the National Ornamental Metal Museum. The eastern portion of the complex containing the U.S. Marine Hospital Building, the Nurses Quarters, and the Steam Laundry was sold by the federal government in 2003 to a private group headed by Lauren and Hilliard Crews.

Renovation of the main brick hospital building was complete by October 2020 and the new development was branded The Marine Residence.

It's the Hunt-Phelan House for our Friday Feature for your feed!

As the last standing example of the grand style of architecture prevalent during the Antebellum South, the home was owned by George Hubbard Wyatt until 1845 when it was purchased by his cousin Elijah Driver.

Driver’s daughter Sarah Elizabeth, and Sarah’s husband, Confederate colonel and land surveyor William Hunt, lived in the home during the Civil War and the yellow fever epidemic of the 1870s.

The home was used throughout the Civil War as the headquarters of both Northern and Southern generals in Memphis; it is alleged that General Ulysses S. Grant planned the Vicksburg campaign in the library there.

The mansion was occupied by Colonel Hunt’s descendants for six generations, and in 1993 was inherited by Bill Day from his uncle, a member of the Phelan family. Day began extensively restoring it, discovering among other family memorabilia a remarkable collection of Civil War-era letters by Jefferson Davis, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and others.

He partnered with Elvis Presley Enterprises in 1995 to make it a 10,000-square-foot museum and tourist attraction, furnished as it was with family heirlooms. In the long run, this was not the financial success all had hoped for, and Day sold the house and auctioned its contents in 2000. It was converted to a bed and breakfast establishment, then to a wedding and events venue.

The home is currently owned by Union Row, LLC.

It's the Overton Parkway Historic District for our Friday Feature for your feed!

This district displays superb examples of fine high-style, architect-designed eclectic residences of early twentieth century Memphis. It's associated with several local architects – George Shaw, Everett Woods, and Jones & Furbringer, among others.

It's Collins Chapel for our Friday Feature for your feed!

Collins Chapel stands across the street from Victorian Village District, and represents a continuing congregation from 1859 to the present, making it the oldest Black church in the city. Over the years, Collins Chapel became an important center of African-American culture in Memphis. It helped found the Memphis chapter of the NAACP and was prominent in the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Earlier church buildings preceded the current one, always on the same historic site; the first church, built in 1860, was destroyed by arson during the 1866 Memphis massacre. The present building was constructed, or rather rebuilt after a lightning fire, in 1913 and was remodeled in 1976 to serve the ever-growing congregation.

Further remodeling has taken place since, but the church retains many of its original features and form.

The associated historic Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital was founded in 1920 by the church, and the hospital facility was built in 1954 (at 409 Ayers Street).

In late 2022, the church received a $500,000 physical preservation grant from the African American Civil Rights grant program of the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service.

Collins Chapel is one of only two single-lot NR-listed sites that the City of Memphis has designated as a local historic district or Historic Overlay District; the other is Maxwelton.

Sears Crosstown was the largest building in Memphis when it opened in 1927. This regional distribution center included a soda fountain, luncheonette, employee cafeteria and in-house hospital, and a three-story-tall “tank room” containing a 70,000 gallon water tank for fire sprinklers.

The retail store closed in 1983 and the customer credit center and catalog merchandise distribution center in 1990. The building was put up for sale, and was finally vacated when Sears stopped printing its catalog in 1993.

A $200 million-plus renovation was completed in 2017 that transformed the building into a “vertical urban village” containing residential, commercial, educational, health care and art facilities. The architectural firm that worked on the project, has declared it “the largest historic adaptive reuse LEED Building Design + Construction Platinum project in the world.”

The structure was honored when The Architectural Review magazine listed it for its significance in adaptive reuse.

In 2018 the transformation of the building garnered several awards: the Memphis chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) presented awards to architectural firms LRK and Archimania for their work, the renovation received the grand prize from the 2018 Congress for The New Urbanism, and it earned a prestigious Richard H. Driehaus Foundation National Preservation Award bestowed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The AIA also selected the building for one of nine 2019 Honor Awards, and the building was the Gold Medal recipient of the 2019 Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The painting has stopped for now. Discussions taking place.

.This is the last straw Memphis......After campaigning to save this one-of-a-kind landmark.... just found out that the tax credits used for the restoration have expired and it has a new owner.
Because of painting it, it will more than likely be removed from the National Register of Historic Places. (It is not within the Central Garden's Historic District because the 19th Century Club group did not want it included). Such a sad and unnecessary action! We do not understand this new need to paint brick in Memphis and especially white!!!!. It causes so much collateral damage!
