🤰🏾Delayed Cord Clamping
When your baby is born, the umbilical cord is typically clamped and cut within a few seconds. However, there is a growing movement to delay cord clamping until the cord stops pulsating. This simple practice can have significant benefits for your baby's health and development.
**Here are some of the benefits of delayed cord clamping:**
* **Increased iron stores:** Delayed cord clamping allows more blood to flow from the placenta to the baby, which can increase their iron stores by up to 30%. This can help to prevent iron deficiency anemia, which is a common problem in infants.
* **Improved circulation:** Delayed cord clamping can help to improve the baby's circulation and oxygen levels, which can be especially beneficial for premature babies.
* **Reduced risk of infection:** Studies have shown that delayed cord clamping may help to reduce the risk of certain infections in babies.
If you are considering delayed cord clamping, talk to your , , or OB.

Black women in Memphis face higher maternal health risks regardless of education or income. It's a critical issue that transcends social boundaries.
“There’s something wrong with the system when African American women who are college-educated and have great jobs can still have poorer outcomes than white women who are uneducated,” says Dr. Nikia Grayson, chief clinical officer at CHOICES.

Thank you
e .o2 .terri
National Midwifery Week is celebrated every year during the first full week of October. This year, National Midwifery Week runs from October 1-7, 2023. It is a time to celebrate and recognize the important work that midwives do.
Midwives are skilled healthcare professionals who provide care to women throughout their pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period. They are experts in normal pregnancy and childbirth, and they are trained to manage low-risk and high-risk pregnancies.
Midwives provide a wide range of services, including:
* Prenatal care
* Labor and delivery care
* Postpartum care
* Well-woman care
* Family planning
* Contraception counseling
* Breastfeeding support
* Education and counseling
Midwives play a vital role in our healthcare system. They provide high-quality care to women and families in a variety of settings, including hospitals, birth centers, and homes. Midwives also help to improve maternal and infant outcomes.
**How to honor midwives on National Midwifery Week**

Earlier this week, the hard-working moms of the families that live at Dorothy Day House got to take a well-deserved break and join a 🎨painting class🎨 hosted by Shanille Bowens of Naturally Nurtured Birth Services, while our wonderful volunteers babysit their children. Pictured with their 🎨lovely paintings🎨 they made that evening are the mothers and Shanille. We are so fortunate to have volunteers like Shanille that provide opportunities like this for our mothers to take some time to relax, learn, create, and spend time with each other, building friendships and community. 💖
