In 1972, Clarene Pinkston Russell and Ruth Wyckoff Hunt convened a group of enthusiastic friends, relatives, and acquaintances at the Schlitz Belle to found a new Memphis-area history club. The single attribute that those attending had in common was that all were descended from pre-1871 residents of Shelby, Tipton or Fayette Counties in Tennessee, Marshall or DeSoto County in Mississippi, or Critt

Christmas in Shelby County has always been a special time of year. For instance, here is a “Toys in Ice” promotion from the 1930s; a Goodfellow's Santa Claus Club letter signed by Lloyd Binford, head of the Memphis Motion Picture Censors Board; a cartoon from the Memphis Press-Scimitar showing the difference passage of Tennessee Prohibition in 1909 made; and another cartoon showing all the great goodies Memphis hoped to receive for the year 1912.
