The City of Milwaukee recognizes National Native American Heritage Month in November. A month to celebrate the contributions of the Indigenous peoples of this "good land" at the confluence of three rivers. Not only do we honor the living Indigenous people of Milwaukee from all Nations, making vital contributions to our city and community, but we honor their ancestors, who have long nourished this land and these waters for hundreds of generations.
The City of Milwaukee acknowledges the original caretakers who were removed or erased including the Mesquaki, Sauk and fox, Dakota Oyate, Ioway, Miami, Kickapoo, and Mascouten; the most recent nation here of the Bodwe'wadmi (Potawatomi); the Ho-Chunk and Menominee, whose creation stories are centered here; and all of the Tribal Nations of Wisconsin: the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Forest County Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk Nation, Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, Oneida Nation, Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Sokaogon Chippewa Community – Mole Lake Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Saint Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, and Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians.
