Fiber Arts Festival to celebrate crafts’ feminist roots and encourages local sourcing The Fiber Arts Festival will take place this Saturday and Sunday at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds. The event offers much more than your average quilting circle.

Lars Mørch will be demonstrating Viking Age methods of laminated knife blade forging this weekend at the Northern Minnesota Metalsmith Guild near Itasca, Minnesota this weekend. Here is preparing some iron on a chilly Friday morning.

Lars is off and running on his first visit to the US! Keep an eye out for him. He’s demonstrating this weekend at the Northern MN Metalsmith Guild at Itasca, MN.

We're honored to have hosted Lars Mørch on campus these last few days! Lars is a blacksmith from Denmark and this is his first-ever visit to the US. While at North House, he taught a class called Forging a Viking-Era Axe Head.

Saturday, January 28th at 9am CST, join us for a live broadcast with Q&A about bead-making in Viking Age Scandinavia (with an emphasis on Ribe, Denmark). Our guest, Thomas Risom, will take you step-by-step through the process, trends, and fashions of glass beads from 1,000 years ago.

On December 11th at 10am CST (17:00 in Scandinavia) we will hold a live broadcast discussion with author, Kim Hjardar, about his publications and understanding of life and warfare in Viking Age Scandinavia. We'll be taking questions. If you have any in advance, let us know!

We are thrilled to start our next season of live online discussions about Viking Age crafts and material culture. Our first discussant will be Nina Eklöf of Sweden. We'll discuss her work with the maritime archaeology at Birka (particularly the wood findings) at 10:00am CST on Saturday, November 12th.

Attention for those who like head coverings! Astri Bryde will be offering a hat class coming up in a few weeks. You can learn, craft, and ask questions from the comfort of your Lund stool (or whatever suits you).

We’d like to send a huge “THANK YOU” to Astri Bryde for her recent visit to Minnesota! Astri came with Viking Connection to teach a class on the Viborg shirt, give some presentations about objects from the Oseberg excavation, and participate in the annual Crow Wing Viking Festival in Brainerd, MN.

Astri spent some additional time working with Steph Andersen who had to cut her time short with Astri in Norway when the pandemic hit, so we’re glad they were able to tie up any loose ends, so to speak.

Up next is the Midwest Viking Festival in Green Bay, Wisconsin on September 23-24th.

This Sons of Norway program on Thursday is open to all! It should be a very interesting evening! Not to mention the delicious pie and ice cream!

His visit will include an evening presentation on the 22nd and a bead-making workshop on the 25th. More details to come.
