National Mother of the Year® award-winner and MSUM graduate Jenessa Fillipi is helping break the cycle of homelessness one family at a time through her nonprofit organization, Down Home.

New students marked the start of their undergraduate adventure today at Convocation, hearing from President Downs, Provost Jackson, and Dean Gravely-Stack. This is the first bookend of your collegiate story—let's make it unforgettable until we reach the other bookend at commencement!

This morning, Dr. Arrick Jackson addressed faculty and staff, sharing accomplishments from the past year and goals for the future. Recent successes included new program offerings, grant initiatives, and increased retention and enrollment. MSUM is ready for another great academic year!

The annual Welcome Week Ice Cream Social was an *udder* success!

Today is the beginning of one of the most exciting weeks of the year on campus: Welcome Week! This week we introduce our newest Dragon students, staff and faculty to the MSUM community. Likewise, we welcome back returning Dragons for the onset of a great year!

As we welcome new and returning faculty and staff to campus this week, we also remember former MSUM faculty and staff that passed away in the last year.

Patrice Delaney, an ecology and evolutionary biology graduate who also earned a certificate in scientific illustration, was featured in a recent story about monarch butterfly migration and conservation. She is a project manager and biologist at United Prairie Foundation and was the inspiration and creator of the hummingbird sculpture pollinator garden on campus.

Congratulations to Jitendra Singh, co-chair of the School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership, and Mazz Marry, Chair of the Biosciences Department, for their participation in the second cohort of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Department Chair Leadership Institute. They are two of only 36 higher education professionals and the only chairs in the region to be selected for this honor.

The comprehensive curriculum covers leading a department based on an institution's mission and strategic plan, navigating difficult conversations, growing and sustaining a future-focused department, and maintaining relevance as higher education changes.

Hailen Ackerman is MSUM's "Ultimate Dragon." Hailen started his Dragon journey with College for Kids & Teens, eventually leading him to attend MSUM for his bachelor's degree in psychology and his master's in educational leadership. Hailen is taking his education to the next level by pursuing a doctoral degree in educational leadership. He's a Dragon through and through. 🔥🔥

Students from the MSUM College of Science, Health, and the Environment embarked on a study abroad trip to explore healthcare in Ireland.

They immersed themselves into the Irish culture and healthcare systems, by touring the Hermitage Clinic/Blackstone Hospital, Sanford Health World Clinic partners, and visiting touristic places.

"This experience has changed each of us, personally and professionally," Jennifer Pederson says.

MSUM alum and vice president and general manager of Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Baseball Karl Hoium began his journey as a mass communications major. He credits mentorship from professor Martin Grindeland and Larry Scott, a legend in the Athletics department, for his trajectory in the world of sports information.

Here at MSUM, we know how important it is to create welcoming and safe spaces for all communities. Erienne Fawcett's work includes supervising two of MSUM's identity centers: the Women's Center and the Rainbow Dragon Center. She understands firsthand how impactful these centers are for students.

"It's important for students to know these spaces exist. They are innovative, always changing, and we're always learning," she says.

In a message to students and employees, President Tim Downs encouraged the campus community to celebrate the contributions of our LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff—whose experiences and perspectives are integral to our vibrant campus community—by attending Fargo-Moorhead Pride events Aug. 8-12.

In his letter, he wrote: At MSUM, we are dedicated to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all students, employees, and campus visitors. We stand for equity. Our goal is to ensure that every member of our community feels acknowledged, appreciated, and respected.

With the 33rd modern Olympics' opening ceremony kicking off today, we remember a Dragon who made major contributions to the Olympic Games. Bob Bowlsby, a 1975 graduate, served as a member of the Board of Directors for the United States Olympics Committee from 2006 through 2014.
