This very daunting statistic is derived from the negative stigmas that students from racially and ethnically minoritized communities face. The importance of this statistic is to shine a bright light on the negative impact that occurs due to these stigmas, which leads to a greatly reduced number of students from seeking help and receiving a diagnosis.
To increase the number of students that can receive a diagnosis, students can become more
educated on not only the priority one's mental health needs to have but on the negative stigmas that occur. This will aid in successfully identifying these stigmas when they are being used to educate others and stop the flow of these stigmas.
Students can see a health professional or visit their on-campus student wellness center, such as the Dyson Wellness Center at North Central College. Click on link in [my/our] bio for more information and resources!
