North Central’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day events on Monday, January 17, have transitioned to a day of virtual programming, including the College’s annual Vision Day and Prayer Luncheon.
While virtual, the day’s lineup of events will have the same goal of encouraging campus community members to learn about and discuss topics such as race, anti-racism, equity, inclusion and Dr. King’s dreams of justice and peace.

Our Story
The Voices of Praise you know today in 2020 made it’s come back from a five-year hiatus in 2018. They came back with strength, determination, and warmth. Under the direction of Reverend Eric Doolittle and Mikel Mayes, rebuilding the choir and band, then finally making their debut back to the stage in 2019. Voices of Praise didn’t just pop out of thin air and it might not have been their original name, too. If one were to dig into newspaper archives, old exhibits, and magazines of North Central College’s Oesterle Library, you’d find a rich history of musical excellence, strong leaders, and devoted gospel singers starting as early as 1992 rich here at North Central College.
About 28 years ago, high school graduates from Corliss High School in Chicago, continued their choir here at North. Before Voices of Praise, there was North Central College’s Youth of Praise, NCYOP (Johnson, North Central College Chronicle ’92). At the time, they practiced at Aurora University before receiving permission from Carol Cory to use Koten Chapel. Driving members included Danielle Smith (Pianist and director), Arnise Irby (vice president), Nicole Davise (Treasurer), Tamica Head (secretary), and Jemea Moore (director). They appear in The Chronicle Article “Gospel choir sings through difficulties” written by Kathy Sloan, a Chronicle contributor in the March ’96 publication. These founding members created the historical space for the future Voices of Praise.
Prior to the Voices of Praise today, just after NCYOP, “The Chosen” appear in a 1996 article of the Chronicle in a section titled, “Gospel Sings Through Difficulties” (Sloan, North Central College Chronicle, ’96). In this article, the choir cancelled their appearance in what is now their largest performance, Gospel Extravaganza. Like any other emerging group, difficulties the Voices of Praise sees today having come back from hiatus, membership and attendance played a key role in their cancellation. Problems discussed by interviewed members such as Karl Brooks ‘90, multicultural affairs director, and Lynn Pries, Campus chaplain, expressed a need for a full-time director and increased publicity. “The Chosen” gospel choir of NCC only seems to appear once in North Central publications. A year later, a new choir name would appear, closer to the original NCYOP of ’92.
The founding of Voices of Praise came later with the students and alumni involved in Multicultural Affairs and the Black Student Association. North Central alumni, Reverend Dr. Tracy Smith ’90 from Gary Memorial United Methodist Church in Wheaton, IL, became an active driver in creating Voices of Praise, directing and promoting the annual Gospel Extravaganza and celebratory events for Martin Luther King Jr (North Central Now, ‘08). Other activists include Tashona Marshal ’02, the ’99 recipient of the Mark Reid Freshman Leadership Award, and VOP president, assisted in launching Anti-Hate Week activities, MLK JR. and black history month events on campus (North Central Now, ‘02). Voices of Praise arrives around 1997 in the “Campus Calendar” section of The Chronicle. Our biggest event, now hosted on February 1st, began back in 1989.
