The years between childhood and becoming an adult are difficult to navigate, not just for teens but for parents as well. You may notice your teens spending more time away from home whether with friends, after-school activities, or working. It's important now more than ever to keep conversations flowing between you and your teen. Make sure they know they can rely on you and come to you if they need to. Some of the best tips to keeping open communication with your teens are:
🔵 Making time daily to hear about their activities, hobbies, and friends.
🔵 Ask questions that will assist in deeper conversations.
🔵 Take advantage of time together on trips or weekends.
🔵 Show interest in their hobbies and activities. Make time to try their hobby together or attend their games.

At some point in your parenting journey, you’re bound to come across a temper tantrum. Though small, children still feel big emotions just like adults, and during early childhood, they won’t know how to process their feelings just yet. A child can be easily overwhelmed with emotions which causes them to react and lash out and it’s important that as their caregiver, to decode their emotions and help them through their frustration. Here are some tips for tantrums:
🟠 Encourage your child to use words to express their feelings. This will help you come to a resolution faster.
🟠 Try to remain calm. Loud or angry tones may cause your child to continue or imitate your behavior.
🟠 Acknowledge their feelings and help them work through to get to a calmer place.
🟠 Praise good behavior by acknowledging when they calm down.
It’s National Nurses Week! We are so grateful for the contributions and dedication nurses bring to healthcare each and every day. Happy Cinco de Mayo! The fifth of May marks the victory of Mexico against the french Army in the battle of Puebla dating back to 1862. This victory became a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign domination making Cinco de Mayo a perfect day to honor the vibrant Mexican heritage while learning of their rich history and resilience!
Just like you taught your child the importance of sitting properly in their car seat or wearing their seatbelt, it's just as important to teach them safety when it comes to their bike, scooter, skateboard, or skates. While a child may see these items as toys, it’s crucial they know that safety must come first. Make sure each time your child goes for a ride they:
🚲 Use their helmets to protect their head, ensure that they are properly fitting and secured
🚲 Have their shoes tied tight so they do not come loose and get caught in a wheel or chain
🚲 Wear bright clothing especially if riding at night so they are seen by cars
🚲 Keep music devices out of their ears so they can stay focused on what's going on around them
ADHD is a developmental disorder that affects adults and children. Symptoms of ADHD often overlap with symptoms from other related physical and mental health conditions. For someone to be diagnosed with ADHD, they must exhibit multiple symptoms to meet the criteria for the diagnosis. Here are some symptoms to look out for:
🟠 Failure to give close attention to details or making careless mistakes
🟠 Difficulty sustaining attention
🟠 Not appearing to listen
🟠 Fidgeting with hands, feet, toys, or when sitting in a chair for periods of time
🟠 Running and climbing excessively
🟠 Difficulty engaging in quiet activities
While someone can have symptoms, it does not always mean they fit the criteria for the diagnosis. If you have questions or concerns about yourself or your child’s behavior. Schedule an appointment online now to discuss behavioral health, https://alliedphysiciansgroup.com/find-a-location/

Milestones start early in a child’s life and are an important way to track baby’s development! Some developmental milestones to look for in your 2-month-old are:
🟠 Holding their head up
🟠 Beginning to push up when lying on the stomach
🟠 Pays attention to faces
🟠 Follows objects with eyes
🟠 Smiles at people
🟠 Turns head towards sounds
As always, our doctors at Allied look forward to helping your child meet and exceed these milestones! Make sure to discuss your child’s progress at your next well visit!

Your child’s teenage years are a time for them to build the skills that will ultimately benefit them in being an independent adult. While it may be a scary transition, it’s an important one. Some ways you can guide your teen in the right direction are:
🤗 Encouraging independence while setting clear boundaries. Like allowing them to go out with friends but setting curfews.
🤗 Learning skills at home. Teaching them to cook, clean, and manage their responsibilities on their own like homework.
🤗 Teaching confidence when meeting new people or tackling difficult situations on their own.
🤗 Looking out for themselves, friends or younger siblings.
🤗 Aid in decision-making when you feel they may be in over their head.
🤗 Encouraging them to make their own money. Whether it be, washing cars for money or getting their first job.
Dear Patients and Families,
I hope this post finds you in good health.
It is with mixed emotions that I write to tell you that after 22 wonderful years of practicing medicine at 54 Preston Avenue, the office will be closing permanently on April 30, 2024. This decision was not made lightly as I have watched all your littles grow in these four walls, and we have made lasting memories that will always hold a special place in my heart. Running a business on top of practicing medicine is an added responsibility and I am ready to close that chapter of my career.
The good news is that although this office location is closing, I am still practicing and will still be able to care for your family. On August 1, 2024, I will be joining the team at Pediatric Healthcare. The team at PHC are wonderful, caring pediatricians whom I have worked with for many years. We share the same values and passion for caring for our patients.
Since Pediatric Healthcare is a part of Allied Physicians Group, all your medical records are easily transferred over. If your insurance is Medicaid HMO, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Fidelis, Healthfirst, Affinity, or HIP Prime, you must change your P*P before May 1st. All Medicaid and HIP HMO patients must call their carrier and have Dr. Teresa Lemma chosen as their P*P. Her NPI # is 1487628368. If you have any questions, please call Toni at our office before April 30th and she will help to navigate you through this process.

We want our kids to succeed in all walks of life, and research shows that early learning activities help mold a child to be curious about the world around them and ready to learn. Use the 5 R’s of Early Education:
📖 READ- read together daily, this helps build literacy, social/emotional skills, and of course language!
🎵RHYME- Play games, sing, or talk with your child to keep their minds stimulated.
🧠ROUTINES- This helps children learn what to expect daily and what is expected of them. Find a schedule that works best for you and stick to it!
🥇 REWARD- if you see your child doing something good, praise them for it! Positive reinforcement is a great way to keep your kids on track.
👫 RELATIONSHIPS- a strong parent-child relationship is important to a child’s mental and emotional health. Teaching children to create strong bonds with those around them.
It's important to always encourage your child as they learn and grow. To make sure your child is on the right track with their learning capabilities, talk to their pediatrician!
