Patients with 9-5 desk positions often suffer from mid back pain for numerous reasons. Prolonged sitting is directly correlated to neck/mid-back/lower back pain, and mid back/scapular muscular atrophy. Strengthening the scapular musculature will promote proper sitting posture and thus decrease back pain with general functionality. See how our strengthening techniques can help you at Integrative Physical Therapy of NYC!

The Coba Board is an effective and efficient tool used at Integrative Physical Therapy of NYC. The board enables patients to challenge their upper and lower body, and easily cycle through exercises. This saves patients time and continues to activate their metabolic system through decreasing rest time that is usually used to transition between gym equipment. Experience this difference at Integrative PT of NYC!

Did you know that your kneecaps glide naturally, and that this glide helps you move around more efficiently? Our kneecaps, also known as patella, glide inwards and down to enable our knees to bend when we walk or run. Sometimes our normal patellar glide can be interrupted through over training or developed muscle imbalances. This interruption will cause knee pain often known as runner’s knee. Physical therapist guided patellar mobilizations, pictured above, can help set stuck kneecaps back on track.
Runner’s knee got you grounded? Call Integrative PT of NYC and see what we can do for you! Contact info in bio.

Lower back pain is often correlated with tight hamstrings as the lower back and legs work together to perform various movements. However, stretching out the hamstrings with a lower back injury can be tricky. The safest and most effective way to loosen the hamstrings is stretching them with a strap or belt, as seen above. This position keeps the lower back in a neutral alignment, side stepping any straining that can occur with other stretching methods.

The cervical retraction exercise, often done with the chin tucked or using a ball for resistance, is beneficial for neck health. This movement involves gently pulling the head back while maintaining a tucked-in chin or placing pressure against a thera-ball. This exercise helps strengthen the deep cervical flexors, reducing strain on the posterior neck musculature, and promoting better alignment. By engaging in these retraction-based movements you can alleviate neck tension, enhance posture, and mitigate discomfort associated with poor posture or neck-related issues, ultimately fostering a healthier and more resilient neck.

During a thorough elbow evaluation, our physical therapists will assess the strength and range of motion of the elbow and wrist. We include the wrist in our elbow assessments because often elbow/forearm conditions will affect the wrist’s coordination, strength and general movement. This thorough approach to physical therapy treatment is highly associated with faster recovery times!
At Integrative Physical Therapy of NYC we see many shoulder injuries. Of these issues, strains or tears to the external rotators is extremely common. The exercise demonstrated above strengthens the infraspinatus and teres minor, the shoulder’s main external rotators. This is also a common exercise used by pitchers and tennis players to get themselves game ready. See how integrated shoulder work can help you at IPT!

Mobility work is very important for the active and inactive patient. Parts of our body can become ‘locked up’ or ‘stuck’ from too much or too little movement. Hypomobility (decreased mobility) can cause general aches and pains, and can lead to troublesome movement patterns if left untreated. The threading the needle exercise (seen above) helps remedy decreased mobility at the mid back and shoulders. See how Integrative PT of NYC can help you with any mobility issue!!

The Prone Press Up, pictured above, is a therapeutic exercise we use at Integrative PT of NYC to restore lower back extension. Injury to the lower back can change and flatten the natural lordotic (extension based) curve of the lower back. This can cause strain and pain to the musculature of the general lower back. Prone press ups safely and effectively restore that lordotic curve and release strain from the lower back musculature. In addition to this benefit, prone press ups can improve symptoms brought on by lumbar discogenic problems. Of course, this exercise is best utilized when prescribed by a physical therapist and/or physician.

Do you have mid back, shoulder blade, or simply shoulder pain? Integrative Physical Therapy of NYC (IPT) has your back, and shoulder. One of the many manual therapy techniques we employ at IPT is the subscapularis (subscap) release, shown above. The subscapularis is a rotator cuff muscle that resides on the inside of the shoulder blade. This muscle rotates the shoulder internally, towards the midline of the body. Sometimes the subscap can become stiff and painful when the shoulder is kept in internal rotation for too long. For example, long periods of sitting or shoulder disuse can cause this. The Subscap often refers pain to the mid back, shoulder blade and shoulder itself. Releasing the subscapularis through therapeutic massage can provide muscular blood flow improvement and decrease pain.
At Integrative Physical Therapy of NYC we utilize various manual therapy techniques to improve patient functionality and daily living. For stubborn hamstring muscle tension and trigger points, our therapists can apply pressure to the hamstring and straighten out the knee while the muscle is under this light compression. This provides the patient with relief as tight, "knotted", parts of the hamstring are targeted for stretching and elongation.

The inverted kettlebell shoulder press is an advanced exercise we often use at Integrative PT of NYC for shoulder patients looking to return to sport and everyday life. The neutral shoulder position of the press removes strain from the rotator cuff, while the inverted kettlebell challenges the stability of the shoulder. Furthermore, this exercise requires the shoulder to move through its full and true range of motion which helps restore any lack of range of motion the shoulder may have.

What are intrinsic hand muscles? They are the small muscles that reside on the inside of the hand which control crucial hand movements. Our hands would be essentially useless without them. The intrinsic hand muscles are broken up into 4 parts; the thenar and hypothenar eminences, the interossei and lumbricals. The thenar muscles are kept at the meaty part of the thumb, the hypothenar muscles line the outside of the fist (by the pinky finger), and the interossei and lumbricals flank the deep sides of the hand bones. These four muscle groups work together to perform paramount movements such as separating and consolidating the fingers, and grasping, holding and pinching objects. Injury to the hand in the form of nerve impingement, fractures, strains, tears, etc, can disrupt the balance between these muscles and thus disrupt normal hand function. We use numerous ways to strengthen and restore the balance between these muscles for our patients at Integrative Physical Therapy of NYC. Swing by and see how we can help you with hand weakness and imbalance!
