Eating broccoli has incredible new health benefits, study finds 04/08/2023

I love to geek out on anything gut-related and my patients have to listen to me talk about gut motility and enterocytes - and how health begins in the gut.

Well… “‘The gut health of the mice that were not fed broccoli was compromised in a variety of ways that are known to be associated with disease,’ said Perdew…Perdew and his colleagues found that molecules in broccoli, called aryl hydrocarbon receptor ligands, bind to aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), which is a type of protein called a transcription factor.”

AHR helps with intestinal barrier function, increasing transit in the small intestine, increasing goblet cells (protective mucus), and increasing enterocytes! Broccoli sounds like a must for leaky gut, if you ask me.

I’ve always pushed cruciferous (broccoli and especially broccoli sprouts) for cancer prevention but now *this*!!!!

Guess what I’m eating today? 🥦🥦🥦

Eating broccoli has incredible new health benefits, study finds We all know that broccoli is good for us, but why? What happens in the body when we eat broccoli? Researchers at UPenn have the answer.

I just had a long conversation with a patient yesterday about the effects of toxin exposure. It's an almost daily conversation I have these days. We must be more careful now more than ever to protect ourselves (and future generations) from its effects (ahem, cancer, infertility....and so much more).

Consider:
1) Clean food (eat organic, especially the dirty dozen)
2) Clean air (HEPA air filter)
3) Clean water (water filter)
4) Cleaner cleaners (switch to safer cleaning products)
5) Cleaner cookware (avoid nonstick coating)
6) Avoid food stored in plastic (yes we even buy ketchup in glass bottles over plastic)
7) Avoid toxins in makeup, shampoo, etc

A growing body of research shows that some chemicals may alter gene function in ways that can be passed on not only to the immediate offspring, but also to grandchildren and perhaps even great-grandchildren.

New Study Examines Which Foods Affect LDL Cholesterol 05/19/2021

I get asked this question weekly - How can I lower my LDL cholesterol through food?

(Keep in mind, that I don’t look at just LDL or total cholesterol values to determine risk. There’s so much more, like looking at HDL and triglycerides too!).

New Study Examines Which Foods Affect LDL Cholesterol A recent study found that whole grains, flax, soy, legumes, tomatoes and nuts may help reduce LDL cholesterol levels, and foods high in saturated or trans fat increase LDL cholesterol levels.
