i’m only human, 2024
Animation, sculpture, and fabric.
“i’m only human” explores dreams as an intimate confession of the subconscious mind, highlighting their psychological role in processing time and experiences. This work invites viewers to contemplate the role of dreams in their own lives—as mirrors to their psyche and as tools for introspection. Visitors are welcome to use the remote to change dream channels.
Koh’s hand-sculpted bedroom, contained within a television, becomes the canvas for a series of dream sequences—each a visual manifestation of the artist’s personal dreams, meticulously selected from her dream journal.

Yihua Tao ( )
DUALITY | ONENESS
Having practiced Mahayana and ta***ic Buddhism for years, Tao found that the more he attempted to uncover truth through dualistic thinking, the more elusive it became.
In the quantum realm, time reveals its duality. On an absolute level, the concept of time vanishes into the quantum foam, where particles pop in and out of existence. Meanwhile, time is replaced by probabilities and uncertainty, and the definition of linear time as a continuous entity doesn’t exist. On a relative level, time exists from the observer’s point of view. Therefore, the relative concept dictates that no two observers’ definitions of time are the same. One’s observation determines, dilates, stretches, or shrinks the existence of certain entities.
DUALTY | ONENESS is an immersive experience exploring impermanence in time under the context of quantum physics. In quantum physics where there’s no constant, only probability, our mind or consciousness can determine the existence or the form of matter. In other words, each observer is constantly shaping their reality. Tao represents the concept through a real-time rendering visual experience: elemental particles are floating across profound darkness, and when the user interacts and engages with the piece, the visual subtlely changes based on a real-time interaction, fabricating the audience’s universe and time.
DUALTY|ONENESS captures the essence of the non-existence of reality from a dualistic perspective. This piece goes beyond the relative aspects of time, inviting the audience into a space of meditation and introspection. Essentially, our mind is analogous to a colorless mirror that reflects and defines what we experience and how we interact with this world. This piece invites a spiritual journey, revealing the impermanence of reality and the convergence of existence and non-existence.
Puzzling Time, 2024
Kathryn Lee (IMA’25)
Birchwood, assorted yarn, and PLA
Puzzling Time focuses on the elusive nature of time and the perpetual struggle of juggling daily tasks. Lee investigates temporal prioritization and how it differs from person to person. The piece features a laser-cut puzzle board shaped like an hourglass and crocheted tangram-style pieces, each representing the multifaceted responsibilities of our daily endeavors.
With respect to Carlo Rovelli’s assertion in The Order of Time that “time is not uniform; it fluctuates and bends according to our subjective experiences”, Puzzling Time encourages viewers to question their priorities and confront the challenge of fitting their disparate elements into a singular representation of time. As intended by the artist, the viewers, despite their best efforts, will never be able to fit all of the pieces into the puzzle as there is intentionally an excess of pieces for the puzzle. This creates a confrontation between the viewer and the inadequacies of time to accommodate all of life’s demands.

Suspended Lament: A Cascading Sorrow for a Mechanical Friend, 2024
Large Scale Kinetic Installation
Allyson Chan, Emily Hu, Reese Lienau, Yizhen Xiang, Naya Fu
A large-scale mechanical te****le comes to life, twisting and squirming in grievance as it reaches out fruitlessly for its defeated counterpart. These eeriliy-anthropomorphic structures present a juxtaposition of life and death in today’s overly-mechanical age.
The advancement of the Internet and the development of capitalist society have made the battle of gender confrontation more and more frequent and intense. In 2022, women face a 39% chance of job and income equality, with only a 20.9% probability of political rights parity. Gender inequality persist.
To tackle its root causes, Yilin Wang’s (IMA ‘26) project, “The Game of Equality" combats gender inequality through an AR game for kids aged 8-12. It combines a pop-up book with a phone-based AR game to educate and engage children effectively. This playful experience fosters awareness of gender discrimination, helping kids connect to real-life situations and reducing the likelihood of growing up biased. Ultimately, it works to alleviate gender discrimination in society. 📚
Sarah Koh, IMA '24, had an outstanding summer and semester. She spent her summer interning at Spotify, improving their web platform for artists and working on Spotify's AI DJ feature. What's incredible is that she was one of only 89 interns chosen out of a whopping 130,000 applicants in the US.
But that's not all. Last semester, Sarah and her team took on a big challenge: finding ways to make fashion more eco-friendly. They used special materials to create a unique dress and showcased it at the Tandon Research Excellence Fair. Their work even got them to the semifinals of the Capstone Pitch Competition.
Sarah Koh's achievements in music tech and sustainable fashion show her dedication and creativity. Her story is an inspiration to everyone at NYU's IMA program.
