🧜🏼‍♀️Growing up in South Texas I was always in the sun, on the beach and in the pool (outdoor & indoor). On the beach I was diligent with my sunscreen on my face. I still suffered a few burns (it’s no fun to come in & reapply, I get it!). In the pool was a different story: it’s nearly impossible to wear face sunscreen + cap & goggles while you’re swimming for 2 hours. And that was every afternoon during peak ☀️ time, from 1-3pm. These big ole cheek bones are the first thing the sun sees.

Do I regret it? Never.
Am I going to avoid the beach, pool and sun? Never. 🧴 👒

I miss smiling. I miss showing patients I smile with them, for them, at them. I miss showing my true emotions. And there’s no better way to show this than your facial expressions.
In medicine, the physician-patient relationship is of the UTMOST importance. Now we have to build this via other, unnatural ways... sans handshakes & smiles.

I moved to Manhattan during the middle of the pandemic. None of my patients here have ever seen my face (besides photos on IG or the Internet), which deeply saddens me. A smile can make a persons day. While my patient’s smiles make mine, I wish I could reciprocate.
