CONFIRMED ARTISTS: JEFF & JULIE!

Alongside Huracán, director Jeff Taveras and Huracán-member and partner Julie Aponte Taveras are joining us for the exciting celebrations this October!

Raised in Queens, Jeff started his career at Santo Rico Dance Company. After being an intricate part of the team for 8 years, Jeff became the Director of Santo Rico Queens and eventually Santo Rico Pro team.

In 2016, he decided to take his career a step further and opened Huracán Dance Studio, which expanded to numerous teams in several cities, with hundreds of dancers.

In 2023, Jeff became the owner and director of the New York International Salsa Congress, and is also the director of the Tri Dance Fest.

Julie has been a part of Huracán Dance Company since its inception. She is an instructor, performer and choreographer for the company. Julie started Dancing at Santo Rico dance school when she was just 5 years old. At the age of 15, she began to travel abroad to perform and teach workshops. Julie has performed in France, Russia, Germany, Peru, the Caribbean and many cities throughout the United States.

New York International Salsa Congress Under New Ownership

We have big news to share with you! After eight years of remarkable growth, elevating the artist and attendee experience, and enhancing a globally recognized brand, the New York International Salsa Congress (NYISC) is soaring to even greater heights. We are announcing the sale of the renowned New York International Salsa Congress, a cornerstone event in the global salsa dance community.

Please welcome the new leadership of the NYISC, Jeffrey “Huracan” Taveras and his brother, Abel Taveras, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for this iconic celebration of Latin dance and culture. Together, they bring over forty years of combined experience producing and managing successful community-based salsa events. They are the current owners of the Tri State Dance Fest and Huracan Dance Company. Jeff and Abel’s commitment to preserving the priorities, values, and essence of the NYISC while bringing fresh perspectives, will undoubtedly elevate the experience even further for dancers, educators, and enthusiasts alike.

"We wish them nothing but the best moving forward as they take this event into the next decade and beyond" said Vilma Villavicencio, one of the former Co-owners, along with Luis Guerrero and her husband Manuel Villavicencio. The New York International Salsa Congress has been a staple in the dance community, and this transition represents a promising future for the event, ensuring its continued impact on the global salsa scene. This deserving artist winner will receive a one-year mentorship - a $500.00 unrestricted grant from MTEAF to fuel his/her creative journey.
