Yesterday, August 1, Higher Achievement Program (HAP) students, faculty, and parents celebrated HAP graduation in the Church of St. Francis Xavier. HAP alumnus Dr. Raja Flores ’84 delivered the keynote address. Since 1966, HAP has provided educational and social enrichment to rising eighth grade boys from across the five boroughs and beyond.

Thank you to all the HAP faculty members who worked tirelessly to share the benefits and joys of a Jesuit education with 185 young men this summer.

Congratulations to Emir Yuksel ‘24, Alexander Zagoreos ‘24, and Mehdi Merah ’24! The three recently graduated spent their summer playing rugby internationally with the USA Men’s Under 18 team.

The young men played in Uruguay against Chile and Uruguay on July 6. Then, on July 10 and 13, the team played Buenos Aires Academy in Argentina.

Merah and Yuksel shared more about the experience as they have recently returned home.

“It was a great experience to be able to play internationally,” said Merah. “The game was extremely fast and it took a lot out of us physically and mentally.”

“We played in a stadium for Chile and Uruguay and it was split teams, everyone started and got minutes and they were 50 minute games,” said Yuksel. “The two games against Buenos Aires Academy were two separate locations. The first location was a very special place as not many teams get the privilege to play there. I believe it was called the BAC. We then played at another location that had many fans and it was like nationals where there were many fields. The experience was amazing, to see the work we put in and how we played against great countries and the academy teams. Even though we went 0-4, we were in contention to win for all those games, definitely the best game being the third game which was the first against Buenos Aires. Talking to kids and seeing their culture, eating their food after games, and understanding where they come from and why they play rugby was great to learn. Hospitality from the players and coaches was amazing. After every game and sometimes after practices we were invited to a meal.”

The Power of Rugby: Traci Young’s Incredible Gift to Mike Tolkin % | YSCRugby | Women's Rugby News 07/17/2024

Mike Tolkin '85 is known as a legend in the world of American rugby. His success ranges from Super League titles to leading the USA National Team to serving as the General Manager of Premier Rugby Sevens—to name a few.

Xavier was blessed to be transformed by Tolkin's skills as well. Xavier rugby won three national high school titles under the leadership of Tolkin. When the former Rugby coach and English teacher was diagnosed with liver cancer, the rugby community rallied around him, searching for a donor.

On July 2, 2024, Tolkin underwent a successful liver transplant. Traci Young, a rugby coach herself, made the selfless decision to donate 60% of her liver to Tolkin. May God bless her generosity.

For more on this incredible story, read Your Scrumhalf Connection - YSC Rugby editor, Wendy Young's article here:
